I want to get into a good school...

I really want to get into a good school. Not Ivy League but somewhere that is known for good academics. So here are some details & you can give me your opinion on some colleges and universities.

I go to an IB school.
I’m taking:
A2 English HL
History HL
German B HL
Art SL
Biology SL
Math SL

I’ll also be doing the Group 4 Project (if you know what that is)
By the time I apply I will have taken MUN (Model United Nations) and GIN (Global Issues Network) for 2 consecutive years. I’m also a member of the school choir. I also will have completed 150+ hours of Community and Service by graduation.

My grades were usually always a 5 and above besides one 3 at the end of 9th grade (which my teacher said he would change but never did). I haven’t taken the SATs yet but I think I’ll do pretty good, I took the PSATs in 9th grade and did better than most sophomores.

I was thinking about Tufts, Haverford, Amherst, Carnegie Mellon & Hofstra. What are my chances? Or what are some other schools I should consider?

Unless you know your GPA (weighted and unweighted) on a 4.0 scale, your class rank, and your SAT scores, it’s not really possible to assess your chances.

Only providing a PSAT score is not sufficient, and only indicating your score as “did better than most sophomores” is really not sufficient.

The problem with my GPA is that I go to an IB International school where we get graded 1-7 and they don’t offer a GPA on a 4.0 scale. Like I said I get 5-up with 7 being the highest and not easily given out. My class has about 22 people and I would say I’m in the top 8 for sure.

You have to convert somehow to see how you compare to other students. According to the IBO, the scale is like this:

7 Excellent
6 Very good
5 Good
4 Satisfactory
3 Mediocre
2 Poor
1 Very poor

And they provide this translation for the ToK scores:

A Excellent
B Good
C Satisfactory
D Mediocre
E Elementary

So, to get a rough comparison, I would do this:

7 = Excellent = A
6
5 = Good = B
4 = Satisfactory = C
3 = Mediocre = D
2
1

To convert, I would make:

7 = 4.0
6 = 3.5
5 = 3.0
4 = 2.0
3 = 1.0
2 = 0.5
1 = 0.0

Use that conversion and calculate your GPA. It won’t be perfect, and colleges may look at it differently, but we need some sort of conversion here to guess at your GPA. Also, an idea of what you consider a “pretty good” SAT score would be helpful. Have you at least taken a practice test?

Think of it from our perspective. If I said “I have a pretty good GPA. Mostly A’s with some B’s. I think I’ll do pretty good on the SATs. I do some stuff for ECs”, does that give you any context to determine my chances to specific schools?
