I want to get out of the cold-will Duke shelter me?

<p>I wanted to say something other than “chance me.” But seriously, it’s so cold in VT. I know my resume may be a bit weak for Duke, but do I have a shot whatsoever?</p>

<p>White Male
Public School in VT which has sent kids to Harvard, Penn, Yale, Stanford, Dartmouth, Cornell, Wesleyan, Middlebury, Carleton, etc. in the years I’ve been here.
2/240 class rank (our valedictorian is brilliant)
4.08 out of 4.33 unweighted (having taken the hardest classes)
SAT reasoning (from a single test date) CR-700 Writing-720 Math-780 (Comp 2200)
SAT 2’s Math2- 800 US history-770
AP stats and US history scores both 5’s (I’m now taking four more APs)
ECs:
9-12 Math League (President)
9-12 Student council (officer)
10-12 MUN (I’ve won numerous awards and gone overseas)
11-12 NHS-I’ve tutored kids to boost our school’s standardized test scores
11-12 Varsity Tennis
11-12 Scholars’ Bowl
I also work as a pharmacy technician
Awards:
MUN awards, RPI $60,000 scholarship, History awards, national Merit finalist, academic allstar
Miscellaneous:
Did a summer course at Brown U. and also did Green Mt. Boy’s State</p>

<p>As for my essay/ recs, I guess they’re good; I don’t really have a frame of reference.</p>

<p>You’re definitely in at Duke, as long as you don’t put the cold as your only reason for wanting to go. Best of luck.</p>

I laughed for about half an hour when I saw that. Sorry about the cold thing, but in all seriousness, I love the school on its own merits; I’m just really hating winter right now.</p>

<p>You have a decent shot but try and raise the SAT 100 pts to have a strong shot.</p>

<p>^Yeah, Duke’s English scores are what scare me. Also, I think being from New England will hurt, because so many kids from here apply to/go to Duke. But a 100 point jump is out of the question. The best I could manage is probably a 2600.</p>

<p>Go for it then. If you could get a 2600 you are most certainly in at Duke. Or anyplace else for that matter.</p>

<p>If you get a 2600, you won’t get into Lehigh or Tufts since they practice yield protection.</p>

<p>“Yield protection”-I’ve heard about that. That’s when they know you’re using their school as a safety and so don’t accept you, right? Like if Tufts knows a kid can get into Harvard, then they won’t go to Tufts, so why let them in? I wonder if this is true of Wesleyan and Yale, Haverford and Swarthmore, etc. It would be interesting to look into.</p>
