I want to transfer as a freshman, how do I convince my parents?

I am currently a freshman at Florida State University, and I have been considering transferring next semester. I am originally from Atlanta, Georgia, and Georgia Tech was my first choice. I was waitlisted and never accepted, and I didn’t apply to any other in state schools so FSU was my next best option. Right from when I decided, I knew FSU was not the place for me, and I still feel that way. I miss Atlanta, my home, and my family so much and it hasn’t really gotten better since I have moved in. I have joined clubs here, I’ve made friends, my roommate and I get along very well, and my classes are fine, but something is just really off and I don’t feel like I belong here. I applied to transfer to GA State next semester and got in, but my parents are making me finish out the semester before I transfer and I really don’t want to. I want to be closer to home and it would make me so much happier, so how do I convince them to let me? It has been really rough and I know a lot of freshman struggle at first but I just know that this is not the place for me and I want to leave as soon as possible. How do I talk to them and convince them to let me?

If you were not accepted as a freshman at GA Tech you will not be accepted as a transfer after one semester at FSU. you may be able to transfer to GA State.

You are already 1/2 way through the semester. Don’t waste the opportunity to start on track as a second semester freshman at GA. It sounds like academics are going well so it would be a waste to bail now. Keep going to your clubs and stay connected with your friends, call home when you need to but it’s already mid October. You’ve got this!

It is really immature to throw away this semester because it doesn’t “feel right”.

What do you have, one and a half months left? I would try my best to stay. Are we talking major mental health issues related to being there? Severe anxiety and/or depression? If not, see what you can do to make it work for another 2 months. If you are really struggling mightily and you feel emotionally vulnerable, then I would answer differently and you need to tell your parents that.

If I’m reading FSUs calendar correctly, the last day to withdraw from a class and not get a grade is Oct. 19, but the last day to withdraw from the college (and not be charged) was the end of August. If you leave now, how much money will that cost your parents?

You should absolutely finish out the semester. It’s truly the blink of an eye. So many freshman struggle their first semester.
