So I’m in a tight spot. I was denied a dorm at school because of capacity. On my FASFA I put my school down as live on campus. I have already received my aid letter & summery (no aid yet) but now with this no housing I have a issue. So I went and edit my housing in. FASFA and starting looking for apartments near the school. I’m going to be a full time student for a 2 year degree at Adirondack community college . I am 26 year old so I do prefer this but I wasn’t prepared for denial with little time left. Am I taking the right steps ? What should I do? My efc is 0000 and I’m actually leaving a toxic relationship that took everything from me for doing this…I just need direction with little time left
( I live in Staten Island currently so commenting is out the question )

If you’re in Staten Island, why did you pick a school by Lake George? Do you have family in NY that you could live with? Leaving a toxic relationship is the priority. You can sort school out later.
I would call the school and explain your situation in person. It may be that some students didn’t show up, etc. and
that there are dorm spots available. You could also try a short term lease and see if you can move into the dorm at mid year. Housing costs are a lot less up there than on SI.
Good luck.
First off, you need to send in an “Adjustment to Housing Status” form with FAFSA. They need to know ASAP if you’re not living on campus since it affects how much aid you get. Not doing this in a timely manner is no bueno for you in the medium term.
They’ll make an adjustment based what your costs are estimated to be (generally, you get less if you live off-campus, but it sounds like you’re aware of this already).
Finally, ditch the relationship and make it your next order of business to find housing. See if you have a friend you can crash with while you search or see if there’s a room you can rent. I don’t know what the living situation is like in Staten Island, but I’m sure you’ll find something that’s likely cheaper than what your dorm would cost. If you have a lot of stuff, shove it in a self-storage unit or sell off what you don’t need on craigslist. Good luck!
Depending on when Op got accepted, he need to put down his housing deposit ASAP because housing is on a first come first served basis. If Op cannot get into the dorms, he may just have to live in off campus housing. He must be prepared to pay the first month’s rent and security out of pocket in addition to any monies that will not be covered by his Pell/loans.
If you are on SI, I don’t understand why you did not apply to CSI, which also has dorms
