I got the letter in the mail a few days ago…Im dissapointed but I think Ill try my luck again next year as a freshman in college. The thing is Im going to Oxford College of Emory University and they dont have many EC’s so what should I do??

Also I want to try and pick apart my application to see where I went wrong.

Also one weakness you cant see is that my math grades are sufficiently lower than other subjects such as history, I made mostly C’s there…so can you all tell me what I should do next year to get in?? And what I did wrong before? Thanks alot.

I’m sorry for you, but so impressed with your commitment to reapply. Oxford College at Emory is amazing. I can’t believe there won’t be plenty of opportunities for ec’s that interest you. In terms of suggestions, I would think that if math is a challenge, that’s what you want to spend your time working on. And make sure you take math in college.

Take a cirriculum that mimicks the Academy, but not one that would put you totally off your major were you to re-apply. Most majors for the first year will mimick the Academy pretty well, unless you major in Advanced Tether Ball.

As you prepare to reapply, keep in mind the key areas USMA has told you it uses to rank candidates - Academics, leadership and athletics.

Academics is, by far, the highest weighted area for a non-recruited athlete. Work on improving your SAT math score. Get some review books and practice those SAT tests until you can score over 650. If your verbal score is under 650, work on that as well. I believe SAT scores are the number one item used to rank academic ability by the academy.

Remember that you are competing with the other candidates in your congressional/senate district. If you are in a very competitive district, you should find out if you are eligible to apply in the district where you attend college. That may improve your chances.

While EC’s are nice. I think they are secondary to strong SAT scores and participation in activities that demonstrate a desire/willingness to assume leadership responsibility. Ggetting a leadership role in a college activity as a freshman may be difficult. I suggest showing leadership interest in other groups such as church youth programs and scouting where tenure is less important to getting leadership opportunities.

Finally, I believe the academies value team sports for more than their physical demands. The sense of team spirit is vital to the academy process. With this in mind, join some team intramural sports.

Most of all, keep your positive attitude.

Thanks for your willingness to serve our great country.

Join ROTC, show that you are dedicated to becomming an Army Officer. SATs aren’t important anymore for you as I understand it. Everything depends on your college transcript. Take the same classes you would be taking at the academy and ace them. You need to work on your math. With scores that low you would not fair well at the academy and you might likely be placed in remedial precalculus if admitted. Work on the math! West Point is very math oriented as it is primarily an engineering school.

Look on the math on this site. You are expected to know all of this material when you enter the academy. The vast majority of Cadet Candidates have a very good grip on the material.

Work hard this year and perservere. Keep physically fit, academics top notch, show your interest in ROTC (could grab you a nomination if you know your stuff), aspen is right about Scouting, try a Venture Crew, that should be right up your alley. Did you apply for USMAPS?

The good news is they waited this long to reject you (seriously), this probably means you were a pretty good candidate and not too far off from the cut, so you just need to hold out a year and you’ll get your shot (they give brownie points just for reapplying you know). Never surrender, if your goal is to join the Corps of Cadets you will do just that if you give it your all.

Man, looks like you kept busy during high school Your overall grades are good-- but as you mentioned, math may have hurt you a bit.

If you plan on reapplying next year, definately look into ROTC. It’ll show your dedication, hopefully prepare you a bit for the academy, and give you a taste of the whole leadership-thing. Your application shows academic and fitness potential-- but there is no mention of leadership positions.

This may be a dumb question WoW but is your name so because you play World of Warcraft? If it is I think that may be your answer. I was addicted to video games (Final Fantasy/Call of Duty/Halo/Half-Life to be accurate), and you really can’t excel at much when you mess with that stuff. Even if your not named for that reason, a word to the wise: Play in moderation.

Were your sports varsity level? Did you have leadership positions in your clubs? Those would be good. Look for volunteer work in the area that puts you in charge, anything to do with kids would be good. Here’s what the basic plebe load is, so I’d look for comparable classes.

Chemistry (two semesters)
English composition and literature
History (American or World), two semesters
Intro to computing and information technology
Discrete Dynamical Systems/Intro to Calc
Calculus
General psychology

As a yearling, you take physical geography, American Politics, probablity and statistics, Calc II, physics, philosophy and economics, so those are some others you can look at.

Thanks to all… Idk where to start…hmm lets see well my CFA scores were

60 push ups
75 sit ups
18 pull ups
6:30 mile
I forgot my bball throw

And yes ragmanlaw I do play video games but not World of Warcraft I hate that game its boring to me. Call of Duty is the best game ever made though!! lol. I dont play them very often, maybe twice a week.
