I was rejected from NC State, what are my next steps

I have a difficult story that can essentially be summed up as: I went to UNC, performed extremely poorly due to mental health problems, and had to medically withdraw my sophomore year. When I withdrew my GPA was a 1.8. After being hospitalized for a while I returned to community college and have taken several classes as a Non degree seeking student at NCSU. My respective GPAs at those schools are a 4.0 and a 3.87. I now volunteer in a selective position at a hospital. I had an internship this fall related to my major. I work 20 hours a week. I’m taking 13 hours this semester of challenging classes and expect to get straight As. In highschool I had a 4.0, 7 APs with perfect 5s, and a 34 ACT.

Yet I just heard back that I was rejected from state for spring transfer cycle. I’m crushed as I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to return to UNC as I was isolated there. There’s few other schools in the area that offer the major I desire (public health). And I’m running out of classes to take at my community college, as I’ve fulfilled so many gen eds. At this rate I’ll be graduating a year+ behind.

What can I do to make myself more competitive for the next round, will my year at Chapel Hill ruin my chances of transferring anywhere?

Also any recommendations on other NC schools to apply for would be welcomed

East Carolina University has a very good health school, and the university is well regarded for its focus on medicine. Have you considered applying to ECU. The reality is, at this point, if you want to continue to pursue your education goals, you should consider every possible good option.

I see in your other thread(s) you are considering Meridith, UNCC, and UNCA. That’s a good start. However, to give yourself the very best chance at success, you should consider every school in the UNC system (if you need to stay in that system for cost restraint.) That includes ECU, UNCG and any others.

Remember, if your goal is to enroll for the 2020 spring semester, you really don’t have the time to pick and choose one or two schools at a time to which to apply. Now is not the time to be picky. Now is the time to apply to five or six choices that run the gamut from your favorite, to the ones you feel are your second-level options, on down to the schools you never thought you would attend that we should label as “safety or match” options.

The ball is in your court Emberry. If you want this PH degree, turn over every possible rock in your search for a new school.

I wish you the best of luck!

Spring transfer may be significantly more or less competitive than fall transfer, due to varying number of applicants and spaces. If it is significantly more competitive for NCSU public health, then you may want to apply again for the fall, although you should also investigate other plans.

1° at your CCor through NCSU, plan to take classes that you don’t need to transfer but which could be useful to broaden your understanding in your major: Cultural Anthropology, Political science/Government, philosophy, economics, biostatistics (or statistics applied to social science), history (especially social and cultural history). Then reapply to NCSU.
2° apply ASAP to UNCA, ECU, etc.
3° what about a college like Davidson? Run the NPC. Would it be affordable? They don’t take many transfers but meet full need without loans.
4° you need to explain why you interrupted your schooling. DO NOT say “mental health issues” but rather simply “serious health issues that required hospitalization” then “fully recovered, as can be seen from CC grades”.

Go back to UNC if you have that option available. The people/classmates will all have changed. You will only feel isolated if you let yourself become isolated. Do all of the things which you know will keep you happy. You have grown.
