I was rejected...

but I am gonna appeal. I know it is a long shot, but any suggestions?

plan on appeal based on being a URM: Cambodian something i had no mention in my app

I don’t think that will help you if your appeal is just based on race.

Yeah, they want you to add major things, I assume. Are there any current students that successfully appealed here?

well that i also miscalculated my gpa and that i was successful in being a private tutor, more volunteer service.

Iamrecognized can you post your stats in regards to appealing?

GPA (obviously the low point): 3.5ish uw, 3.95w
SAT: 2080 CR720 M680 W680
ACT: 33
SAT2: Math2 690, US History 640
Rank: about 20 of 170
Caucasian Male, Private Religious School

All offered honors at my school, and all but one AP, and that was because you could only take AP Chem or AP Bio. Also, through classes offered at my school, as well as a summer course at USC I have 7 or so semesters of various College Credit.

Applied for Video Game Design Major

Recs: Good, I would assume, also got one from a USC alum who is the city manager of Lakewood CA.
Essays: Everyone says they were good
EC: Lots of Marching/Concert/Jazz/Community Band, a few clubs, some community service, work as a tester for a videogame designed online, and I arrange music for band at school.

Anyway, I plan to include some stuff like the scores of what I arranged, as well as the code and an example CD of some small games I have made. I thought about bringing those to my interview AFTER the interview.

I guess you could appeal but I don’t know anything about the appeal process. Did your rejection letter mention anything about transferring in later on?

Retake the SAT II tests. They both have nice curves, and since you were in AP, you could probably improve a lot.

did you win any awards? are you part of a time that has done better this year?

for example, i’m on a mock trial team and we’re top 3 in the state this year and going to nationals. seeing as no colleges know this, technically its grounds for an appeal (since in the past we’ve never made it past counties lol)

There isn’t time to retake SATII’s, and no to the club thing either.

<–rejected
<—SAD
<---- going to UCSD
<---- moms gunna kill me hahah (asian)

Okay here is my deal… I AM going to USC, regardless as to whether the appeal works or if I have to transfer.

Should I put that in the letter, or will that actually hurt me?

I’d put it in. You just have to make sure you have some NEW information for them to evaluate. Dig deep and find something important.

BTW, I was a transfer student many years ago into USC and I was VERY glad I did. It worked out very well for me.

Good luck!

I would tell them that USC is your dream school and why. What is it about the video game design program at this school that makes you want to get in so much? Let them know that! Ask them how you can strengthen your application. This shows that you are serious and ready to listen to their advice to get in. And then, take their advice and do what they suggest. Maybe more leadership experiences (which they seem to like) or whatever. I don’t think it has anything to do with your SAT scores. They are fine. You need to stand out in some way that they can relate to.

Dude, Iamrecognized. Your stats are way to good to be rejected from USC. I know plenty of people who have gotten in with way lower stats than you.

I have a question though, how many AP’s did you take total during your high school career?

suenos53,

The thing I like about the Video Game Design Course at USC is they are the ONLY ones who have it. As for what I plan to include as new information, I am gonna add some stuff about music, such as I took up French horn and tuba recently, and I plan to include things that I realized after my interview that I should have brought, such as scores for things I have arranged and code for games I have made (I may even include a CD with the games and stuff). As for leadership, I have not really don that much new in that aspect.

greenapplementos,

My stats are all at or above their average, accept GPA, which is far too low. .3 below average. As for AP’s, I have finished one Ap, and two semesters College Credit, and I am taking 2 more AP’s and 2 four more semesters College Credit Classes.

Taken AP Chem, College Credit American History (2 semesters).
Taking AP Eng Lang, AP Gov, College Credit Calculus (2 semesters), College Credit Statistics, and College Credit Math Structures

The only other courses my school offers is AP Bio, AP English, and College Credit World Civilizations. You can only take AP Bip or AP Chem, AP English or AP English Language, and World Civ didn’t fit in my schedule.

Good luck, Iamrecognized. I also believe your stats and GPA were within range, but the spots for this major are very limited and the acceptance rates are tiny.

Did you apply to the Interactive Media major in the School of Cinematic Arts? If yes, you might want to call the SCA admissions rep and ask what sort of criteria was most important in their determinations. They put much weight on 1) personal statement where they are looking for your vision for the future of the field and what specific direction you plan to take, 2) creative resume (on which one can list all manner of activities in addition to game design and testing, from composing, to playing in a rock band, to fine art, to acting, to writing, etc–the more and varied and award winning, the better), and 3) letter of rec from outside school–for example, a supervisor if you worked on a game design or creative project (like a band director, gallery owner where work was displayed, etc).

For your appeal, I would suggest you update and resend these to both USC Admissions and the SCA, along with the sample of your work.

Lastly, is your GC on your side? Will he/she call the admissions office on your behalf, and perhaps write an appeal letter for you as well?

And did you know that there is a new computer game major (beginning in fall) at UCSC? Just in case…

To Iamrecognized: I don’t work for USC, but I would suggest emphasizing that you can play for the USC Marching Band. Also, I would suggest inquiring how many applicants there were for the Video Game Design major? It is true that USC is the one excellent university which offers this program at the undergraduate level. Therefore, I don’t know if USC was swamped with applicants for this major or not. Can you ask to be wait listed?

madbean,

It is not the interactive media major I applied for. I applied for Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (Games). I will call and ask those questions though. What is the new fall 08 major?

mdcissp,
I did emphasis the importance of the band for me in my original app. My parents met in the band XD. According to them however, the Engineering school has NO impacted majors, so… whatever… I will ask how many applied though.
