I am currently signed up with Robinson but I want that widget.
Lemme know if you drop that class or Just Drop IT! lol

any reason why your not taking UGS 303? i thought it was required for mccombs also?

and no i am not gonna drop that AST 301 class. but i’m pretty sure someone will.

i am a transfer student and i was informed by the adviser that transfer students can take UGS only in the spring (I am guessing that is b/c most freshmen need to take it in fall). Personally, I like the way my schedule is right now, as far as class workload goes, and would not prefer ugs with ba 324 govt. and all that. I am even taking three courses this coming summer (Both Histories & English 316k) and planning on Clep-ing Psychology (studying lil bit for it right now) so my senior year doesn’t look too bad. That way I’ll only have to take four classes my senior year, both fall and spring even after fitting in the classes I need for my MIS Minor. So I think I am on track, hopefully …but I just need to build my resume and get involved to better my chances for an internship.

Someone dropped AST 301 same night & I tried to register but my registration access time was closed so I had to wake up @ 8 am to register…anyways I got in.

i didn’t even know that transfer students can only take UGS only in the spring. lol i registered for UGS 303 but i will be dropping it now once i get off waitlist for ARH 301. I wonder why it let me register for UGS 303 in the first place?
but now that you told me, i kind of do remember my adviser telling us about UGS class can only be taken in the spring for transfers.

and my schedule is on the safe side because i want to do internal transfer into mccombs.
ADV 305
AST 301
NTR 306
and hopefully ARH 301. (i am number 3 on the waitlist so i am pretty sure i will get in that class).

yea it also let me register for BA 324 even though its an upper division class and I only have 32 transferable credit hours…and as you know, you need to have around 54 or 60 hours to be upper division. I still won’t be upper division at then end of my fall semester but I plan to take another one or two upper division classes in my spring semester. Since I had everything planned out roughly throughout my senior year (including the few classes that I’ll be taking in the summmer and the one I am clepping), my adviser told me that he could make an exception for me. It was because I told him that my junior year looked little too tight and I wanted to move up one or two upper division classes in the spring of my sophomore year.
Now don’t just drop the UGS 302/303 class, rather weigh the course workload for both your fall and spring semester and make a descision accordingly. If you feel like taking it your fall semester, then just try asking him …he might be able to waive it off for you…advisers can do anything…nothing is set in stone.
Btw, since I’ll be in the Astronomy class as you, lemme just go ahead and introduce myself: My name is Ameer I am a transfer student in McCombs as a sophmore planning on majoring in Finance and minoring in MIS. I later plan to do a Masters in Finance, Accouting, or MIS right after my bachelors degree. I am looking for an easy A in Astronomy, although nothing is easy at UT and just getting the degree done as fast as I can while making tons of friends who I can keep in touch post-college. I’ll be living at the Castilian for both semesters and looking forward to some great food ! hopefully

Some upper division are open to people without 60 credits.

Nxt, just a heads up - BA324 is a meticulously hard class (ie - nit picky)- If you do all the assignments to a T, including the oral presentations, and work your butt off on the final project (it’s a group project, so choose wisely ;)), you can get an A in the class, but as you can see by the grade distribution, only about 10% gets A’s. Work hard!!

someone needs to drop CMS

nerd --How do you find out what upper division classes are open to students with less than 60 credits? My son has 52 hours and asked the Natural Science advisors today and they told him he could not register for upper division classes because he needed 60 hours in order to do so.

We need some advice. My son is having some registration difficulties. He was told this a.m. that there was a 95% chance that he’d be in a particular Natural Science FIG. Someone did a pretty good job promoting the FIGs and my son was really looking forward to participating in this one. He spent the day rearranging other classes and programs, and even dropping out of one, so that he could be in the FIG. At 5, he found out that he wasn’t in the FIG, and the only advisor he could find to talk to about it was not all at helpful. She couldn’t tell him why he didn’t get in, if there was any chance of getting on a waiting list, etc.

Any suggestions or ideas? Is there anyone to go to on something like this? Or is he just out of luck?

In reply to cpq1xtbu:
Generally if the student was given a 5-digit unique ID for the FIG (just like he would have gotten for a class from the Course Schedule page) the advisor who gave that to him should have added 1 to the “count” for that FIG, since then when it filled up they would stop giving out that ID number.

There is a chance that he registered so late that when he put in the number, somehow the FIG was already full. But… registration is tomorrow isn’t it? How did he register/re-arrange classes already? Unless you mean in a plan and not in official registration.

In reply to UZ:
I had the same issue a few days ago. I kept checking the CMS listing like every 10 minutes while sitting at my computer today and I eventually got the one I wanted. MWF 10-11am. As soon as I registered the class closed again. It’s hit and miss. Tomorrow is registration day for this week’s orientation, so some spots might open up. Just keep checking throughout the day.

He was told he had a 95% chance of getting into the FIG during the morning advising session. He was told to go back to advising at 5 pm today to see if he was on the FIG list. He wasn’t. He is going to talk with the natural science advisors again tomorrow at 8. Hopefully he can at least get on the waiting list for the FIG. They really shouldn’t tell students they have a 95% chance of getting in the FIG, if that’s not the case. Students tend to rely upon what they advisors say (at least the frosh do).

Well, the 5% happened then. You can’t blame them too much. I wanted to be in a FIG so that I would be guaranteed a CMS and ECO class, but they were all full. The only open FIG’s for Business all involved Calculus, which I already had credit for. I was at last week’s orientation too, so they tend to fill up pretty fast. I don’t think they allocate spots based on orientation sessions for FIGs, meaning they don’t “hold” spots for each session for those that want to join. Once they’re filled, they’re filled.

I ended up getting the classes anyway, and I can just study with other people who by chance happen to be in the classes with me, without any official FIG-ness to it.

cpq1xtbu >> Even if his registration is tommorrow and he can’t get a spot, I believe there are still two more orientations so there might be openings for that particular class that you are looking for…& before July 17 keep looking for people who drop classes. If you still can’t get that class before July 17, try getting it right after payment deadline is due for classes. On August 12, I believe 5 pm, if you don’t pay for your classes, all classes are dropped. Most likely, at least one student might not be able to pay on time for his classes so just look out for that.

ag54 >> The teacher that I picked for BA 324 had a rating for giving out an A 44 % of the time and B 50% just for the BA 324 that he teaches (Teacher’s Name: Morrison, E). Those stats are from pick a prof but I still can’t make a solid statement about the class or the teacher since I have no idea what it would be like. I did read some reviews though and they go very parallel to what you are saying…time consuming, hard, nit picky, etc…But I guess since I eventually have to take it, I might as well take it this year than throw it in the lump of mostly all upper division business courses I’ll be taking my junior year. I am planning to go to writing centers for every essay I write in there but is there anything you would like to tell me if you have heard of taken that class before.

Thanks. I will tell him to keep trying. One of the classes he wants is only open in the FIG section. Maybe there will be an opening in the other, or maybe someone will drop from the FIG.
I’m sure he can find people to study with, even if he isn’t in the FIG.

I went to the last orientation and I’m hoping to get some classes that were close. I just checked Bio 311c and they’re all closed. Will some classes open up tomorrow for all the people who will be registering from the current orientation?

Yes. I was at the first orientation and I was stressing out all night cause all the bio 311C classes were closed. but once registration started most of them opened up.

Keep in mind that those will open to everyone. I had plans to wake up early tomorrow and try to switch my schedule around, since I know classes will open up. But I manged to get it moved around earlier today, so I don’t have to do that.

But they might close quickly, since all the prior orientations are also free to edit their schedules and register tomorrow morning. If you are not scheduled right for 9am, I would suggest you get on your own laptop as soon as your time begins, and register as quickly as you can.

Since I have already gone to a previous orientation, I’m assuming that I don’t have the specific registration time restriction, right?
