I will tear your essays apart!

I’ve been saying that to a variety of people in threads that have tickled my fancy.

To make things easier, I’ve decided to start a thread of my own…so that people can simply give me a short blip about their essay. I’ll read the posts and then PM users who have piqued my interest!

I have (in this month only!) dealt with around 20 essays by people on CC. On average, I give about 3/4-2 pages worth of response per essay. I will, quite literally, give you the most help I can.

Here’s some random stats, if anybody cared:

SAT - 2350
SAT IIs - 750 750 800

Edit: And yes, if you want, I will share my own essays. They’re personal to a level that (almost) no one can steal them.

I’m also within the top 55 nationally in debate + ranked first in New Jersey for debate (2 years consecutively).

Granted, I can give a whole slew of other interesting facts, but that’s mostly irrelevant. I assure you that you’re in good hands.

The reason I’m doing this is that, well, I truly enjoy dealing with college essays. I have no clue why, but after helping a dozen or two of my personal friends, I decided to extend my help to CC itself.

So, CC, what’ve you got to show me?

that’s interesting. but on a deeper psychological level, why? sometimes it’s nice to know what we think our motivations are and what they really are. sometimes they’re different and sometimes they’re same. In either case, i have hunch that i would have a good time reading your response to why even though you said “that you have no clue why”. as a nationally ranked debater, surely you can make up a reason. as long as it’s entertaining, it would be fun to read.

Sure:

When I write my own essays, I go far beyond 13-15 drafts. The two essays I sent out for UChicago and Columbia have been revamped almost 50 times…each! I began writing a personal statement that has been polished to shine in my junior year.

Now, with a majority of my own essays finished, I feel that I could truly be of use to people who are less articulate than I. This is not to say that I am superior to all CC members, rather, I am acknowledging that I have a moderate level of ability that can be of assistance to others.

Some of my closest friends are complete math and science geniuses. Well, not LITERALLY, but at times, they completely astound those around them in their respective expertise. Unfortunately, they write some of the most horrendous essays imaginable. Even with a whole slew of SAT vocabulary words memorized…their problem is actually conveying any higher level of thought out amongst their essays.

Being rather introverted (the lot of them), their extracurricular activities are not the MOST impressive ever. Nor is their SAT score the best thing since sliced bread (the test has a critical reading and writing section, which numbers two, compared to the single math section). Because of this, people like my friends need excellent essays to convey their personality, accomplishments, etc.

Additionally, I feel that the only way to show how human–or what your family life is (this is truly key)–is through an essay. Because essays such as these (or personal statements) are usually based off personal experience (which is really not something we can “change,” per se), there is absolutely zero harm in me assisting others with their essays.

Additionally, I would like to major in creative writing. There is truly no better exercise than editing other people’s works. And, since they can only benefit from the transaction, I would like to make the offer open to everyone.

The cup splintered across the wooden floor…

I can vouch for RedCatharsis’s sincerity. His suggestions were very helpful to me. He can be painfully blunt, but at the end, you KNOW your essay has improved significantly.

Ah thanks, Feed.

Meowmix, what do you mean? :P

Bump! I have gotten 4 PM :)

I’m still a junior, but can I ask you to edit one of my ideas? I kind of need someone to be blunt, since most of my family/friends are too non-confrontational to say anything negative (even if it desperately needs to be said).

I’d really appreciate this because mine needs to be teared apart

A trip to egypt and how I was taking classes with people 6 years younger than me and struggling and worked hard to improve. Basically how that trip gave me skills/lessons necessary for life + college, specifically

Thanks

i wrote an essay on a game of billiards

Essay drawing parallel between a bunk from aushwitz, and what I’m afraid of becoming.
A “Why do you care about some issue” essay
Please help.

Mine is about the merits of gaming yet I’m afraid I might be turning off a lot off colleges if I write about it. I’ve already written an essay that I feel is pretty good, but hopefully you can give me some input?

mine is about butterfly

I have a Princeton supplement about celebrating over 100 festivals in India and why they make me appreciate diversity. I really hate it, I like all my other essays but I need someone to honestly tell me if this essay is worth *****, because P’ton’s my first choice and I don’t want to mess up their app. I usually don’t like sending stuff to seniors, but you’ve already applied EA/D 2 places and seem sincere, so…please help me out? :)

I wrote an essay about two freshmen (of whom I was put in charge) getting in a fight.

i wrote mine comprised of only questions
All in an attempt to reveal my personality

Mine is a personal story of growing up; I really hope you can be brutal. :)

I have three very different yet very similar essays. One, in particular, is a little risky.

my essay is about how i have helped build my school community from scratch. through activities and a competition i have seen the bigger picture.

an essay about not knowing what it’s like to lose a parent yet knowing life present you with challenges you never expect.
