IB U of O or Oregon State

Okay now hear me out
I’m considering Oregon State and University of Oregon for a career in IB
Oregon State offers a BS in Finance which is great
U ofO offers a BS in Econ but have an Investment Group of their own in which they manage over $1M

I know you guys are going to say that these schools are not good enough to break into IB but I have read a lot about people getting into IB from colleges like that.

Please add something about the schools and help me choose

If you have more info on either of the schools I’d be very interested in reading that

Add: U of O offers concentration in Finance as well

bump

Two fine schools with similarities and distinctions; pick 'em. Of course Eugene is a bit more appealing than Corvallis.

U of O probably has more ‘name recognition.’ Corvallis and Eugene are very different so that might guide your decision… Eugene is urban, Corvallis rural. Have you visited both?

Oregon State is superior in STEM. Liberal Arts at UO is said to be good, particularly the English Department. I think the English Department at UO produced author Ken Kesey, author of ‘One Flew Over the Cookoo’s Nest,’ and a founder of the Merry Pranksters of the 1960s.

@OrygunMom I have not visited either. I don’t really care for the vibe of the school as much. I care for how good one of the schools might be for Investment Banking

Strictly speaking, neither one is a target nor a semi target, and neither one has intense recruiting even for backoffice. However, Finance is more than IB and UO is good at what it does.
I assume Oregon is your home state?
What are your stats? What’s your parents’ EFC and how much can they afford?

@MYOS1634 I know that. However I believe because UO have their own firm at which students work will look good on my resume next to internships. I’m interested in IB and HF. If I have no offers from anywhere when I graduate I will look into boutique banks and build up from there as I understand that UO is not a target school whatsoever. Oregon is not my home state. I live in California right now. I’m in CC right now and by the end of this fall semester my gap will be about 3.4 and I’m a member of a the Adelante Program in my school (I am a white male). I will take out loans for my schooling and scholarships hopefully. I’d like to hear back from you

UOR aka UC - Oregon is better known than ORS. Eugene is not urban. It’s a small town 2 hours south of Portland. It’s close to skiing and is a decent small town. Portland is all the rage these days but not my cuppa, too many bums and neck tattoos. Have you considered UW-Seattle? The Foster school of business has a good rep, and there are more banks and VCs in Seattle since it’s much bigger than Portland.

@cmsjmt I haven’t really thought about seattle. do you think there is more banking recruitment over there

If you’re going to be taking out loans, be sure to check the out-of-state costs at all of these schools. U Washington, while a terrific schools, can be cost prohibitive.
Do you have in-state options that you’re considering as well?

If you want to go into IB with a 3.4, your chances aren’t very high. I’d advise you look into Baruch College in New York City. EXCELLENT Finance major and recruiting. 16K tuition OOS + cost of living in NYC is very high, but your odds would be better than from UO.
UCI would be a good UC to shoot for in that field, Cal Poly SLO Orfalea too.
You can only take 7.5K in loans per year, + 5.5K if you took no loans in community college.

@hop the ONLY reason I’m considering Oregon is because its very easy to get into and don’t have a lot of pre reqs.
For california I was considering UCLA, UCB ( but my chances of getting in are not very high considering the competition) and UCI but I heard some bad things about their Business Program. To transfer to any UC i need to complete Calc 7 and 8, which would mean i’m stuck in CC for another 2 years just cause of math.

@MYOS1634 I really appreciate your input. I will definitely look into that college. What is your opinion on UCI for Finance and Econ? I’ve heard that the only UC that recruits is Berkeley. However I am very determined to get into the Finance industry ( as much as I hate math hehe). And my 3.4 for is just in CC which is why I wanted to transfer to another school to raise my gpa then maybe possibly transfer again. However if you think UCI has a decent program I will look into it.
Can you give me any stats on anyone who didn’t attend an Ivy and still got into IB

The Finance industry is different from IB. IB is a specific type of work within Finance.
Typically students who get into IB attended a well-recruited program, are okay working backoffice, have as close to straight A’s as imaginable, have been involved in a sport where they have leadership (captain or if individual sport an excellent record of winning), plus another EC where they made an impact/raised a lot of money, and have lots of calculus/statistics classes.

@MYOS1634 I know what Investment Bankers and more specifically Analysts do. I have been reading about it for the past year and also have talked to people in the business. Making pitch books and observing companies sounds like something I might enjoy doing. again thanks a lot for your replies i highly appreciate them

I could be weighing in a little late here. I would say that I don’t think either of these Oregon schools are particularly good for finance. I am not an expert though. My opinion is based upon my own research and visit to both schools with my son. My son is interested in business and computer science. My general impression was that OSU has more practical internship opportunities for computer science/business related jobs. University of Oregon has a better reputation overall as a school. It’s more competitve than OSU. My son is not a competitve kind of guy. It was not the right kind of school for him. But the finance industry is a competitive field. Perhaps, University of Oregon has a program. I was not particularly impressed by the tour of the business school. University of Oregon has a beautiful new business buiding.

Based on my limited knowledge, I’d just suggest you look at all of your options. I would imagine that there might be a better fit for you somewhere else. Look at the curriculum offered in various schools of business specifically in the finance specialization. I am also a UC Irvine alumni. UC Irvine is ranked something like #38 in the U.S. for undergraduate studies. I did not like the school. I do not think it is a very good school either. But my reference is decades old. I know a little bit about the business school. I think it’s decent. Not great though.

You might check out a school like Drexler? My son received a recruitment brochure from them. They have unique, one of a kind internship program. I was impressed by the high number of students that get jobs right after graduation. Drexler is serious about helping find jobs for their students.

I guess if I was a young person again, I would consider location and where I could get the best internships. I would think that larger metropolitan areas and larger cities would have better programs. I could be wrong.

You seem quite interested in Oregon schools. If that’s stlll the case, I’d say University of Oregon is better choice. University of Oregon has a more academically rgiorous business program. This was not an issue for my son though, because he’s interested in the computer science field. I want my son to be employed when he gets out of school!

Just looked into Drexel. They have a finance department that’s ranked #68. Here’s the link: http://www.lebow.drexel.edu/faculty-and-research/disciplines/finance/faculty Maybe that’s not too impressive. You’d have to check the rankings for UCI and University of Oregon to make a determination.

Drexel is located in Philadelphia. I think that might be advantageous in the finance world.

Sorry, I misspelled Drexel. I am old and feeble minded, lol…
