My son had a huge improvement in the w720 from 650 and no improvement in CR 680 and M 670 from his PSAT’s. Did this happen to anyone else and is no improvement common? He actually took a review class. Did we waste our money?

can’t really say for sure if it was a waste of money, but i suggest you let him take the ACT and see if he fares better there.

yes he did much better! He received a 33 on ACT. Should he just retake SAT’s or both?

Congratulations to your son ibnhf  That score is very high. With regards to retaking, is your son planning to apply to the ultra-competitive schools? The 33, together with high grades and rank, and solid recs, essays, and extra curriculars is good enough to get him into the vast majority of schools, and put him in consideration for merit aid for colleges that offer them. Even with selective colleges, the 33 should at least be above or quite near the 25%-75% range. I also woudn’t worry about sending the ACT instead of SAT. Colleges would accept the ACT. You might want to look into SAT2 requirements for his target schools, his time might be better suited to preparing for those, if needed. Again, congrats.

Thankyou for comments chubeedo, He is a balanced list of schools. He is at a rigorous independent school and in all top classes but had blips with some B’s freshman and sophmore year. He does three varsity sports but does not want to play a sport in college due to his premed interests. he had a great summer lab internship. His GPA is only 3.75/4.5 scale. Ec,s are strong and he is well liked by teachers but i am thinking holy cross, villanova, lehigh and BU are possible. He , however is applying early decision to Vanderbilt. His cousin played tennis there and he is in love with the school. Do you think geographics help?

not really sure about the geographics part. But judging from his stats, I would say that Vanderbilt would be a match, and maybe go as far as highly likely. His ACT score (from the 2012 freshman profile link below) puts him right smack on the upper limit of the 25%-75% range, his GPA is above the profile average, and the EC’s are solid. It’s likely he’ll get in, but I’m no adcom. I don’t think he’ll have a problem getting into those 4 other schools. I would probably add a couple of reaches or semi-reaches, but that’s just me. Is he applying to your state flagship and does the flagship have an honors program, because that’s another application possibility. I would also put in an application to a school, as a true safety, that might possibly give him a generous merit aid offer. All these suggestions are just my take. Good luck :)
