Ice maker not working

I’ll let you know what happens. Replacing the broken part would entail taking the entire freezer door off. My husband is VERY handy, but I’m not sure he would want to do that.

No. That would absolutely suck. Ours was in the door but unit in the freezer. Took 10 minutes after like 2 hours of videos. Haha.

I have an ice maker inside the freezer. It is 10+ years old and it is still working well. It is a subzero. I recently had someone come to repair my stove. On his way out, he said, “that’s a nice refrigerator.”

Bumping this up to update. DH got a response from Whirlpool regarding our submission for repair. We need to wait until some court decision is made in September, but from what they wrote, we will either get a complete new door installed (which is what we want) or 20% of the purchase price of the fridge which is about $400. $400 likely won’t be enough to fix the issue…a new door should do it!

We try to only buy fridges without the ice maker! It’s almost always the element that breaks.

Our current one has an in-freezer ice-maker which we disconnected because of the noise and the tendency of the cubes to grow together.

OP, if you don’t fix it, you may find the assortment of ice cube trays delightful. Right now, I’m in love with the long tin ones that go in water bottles. Silver lining?

Read upthread. We already have ice cube trays. This broke last year…so, we are good to go until it (hopefully) gets fixed!

I got a “temporary “ fridge during COVID because w d plan on getting our kitchen completely remodeled, got pushed off. I love ice so bought a new countertop ice maker every year, loved them, but the problem is you can’t really clean them well, and that got into my head so threw the last one out. Using trays and I hate them (I go through at least 1/2 dozen trays a day). Countertop was great, just kept filling it with water all day long.

An ice maker (in refrig) is pretty essential in our house. My H uses ice often and in generous quantities. He is so worried about running out when we have parties/holidays that he goes and buys bags of ice - which I hate to deal with. I despise using ice cube trays - dumb, but it’s such a hassle! And especially dislike when I get one and it’s not totally frozen yet! I’m sure there are some counter/drawer type portable ice makers that are fine but I’ve also heard plenty of people who have bought one (maybe lower or mid line, I don’t know) and the thrill was short lived.

Can I ask what they didn’t like about them? I have owned at least 5, I order pretty much the cheapest one since in my experience they’re all the same.

Again not personal experience but I’ve heard from friends/family/co-workers about jammed ice, mold/hard to keep clean, water leakage.

I do agree with keeping it clean, but luckily have never experienced jams or leaks.

I am not getting any kind of portable ice maker…ever. Ice cube trays will be just fine until or if this gets fixed.

I’m not looking for alternate solutions…just updating on what Whirlpool sent us as an update.

@thumper1 , I read that you have ice cube trays, but there are trays, and then there are trays! Mini cubes, balls. Just saying, you can get into it!

Edited to add, this was my Amazon Prime obsession. Go figure!

I’m fine with the ice cube trays I have.
