I have now taken the SAT’s 4 times and ACT 3 times.

I’m not particularly stupid - I have one of the highest GPAs at a fairly competitive private school, and teachers and other do HAVE called me bright and intelligent before… So I don’t think I’m dumb. On the contrary, my scores are so EMBARRASSINGLY low, my college counselor keeps asking me whether I was sick on the test day. God, I’ve been prepping since three years ago and taken these tests seven times now lol but I just CANT seem to break the 30 and 2100 barrier!!! I’m good enough to have nailed 5 in BC Calculus two years ago, and I keep getting in 600 range for MATH IIC. LOL

I am miserable…

My encouraging parents have tried to explain to me that I just have “a different way of thinking.” They’re saying something like how my brain works in an iconoclastic way, that it thinks differently and can’t conform to the only-one-answer multiple choice problem solving. Like, what…?

2100 isn’t embarrassingly low. Now, if you were getting like, 1200s… That would be bad.

Anyway, your parents are right about the iconoclastic mind thing. You probably keep justifying wrong answers, thinking outside the box, etc. Basically, you’re being too clever when simplicity is the best answer

If there is any reason for eliminating an answer, then it is wrong. Creativity won’t get you any points.

And you live in Queens, New York and about 2 blocks from john bowne high school? Dude, its like we’re the SAME person. I’ve taken the SAT quite a few times now and i cant seem to break the 2100 barrier either, but i do considerably well in all of my classes. I remember getting kicked out of my english class twice the week before the SAT because i debated a few sentence completion questions with my teacher, trying to show her my perspective of the questions (which, according to the pathetic answer sheet) i got incorrect. I ,was of course, logically correct but i got kicked out anyways for refusing to comply to that damned answer sheet. I also get the EASIEST questions on tests wrong because i “over think” them. And yes, i know the difference between downright stupidity and being a "iconoclast; My word to you, my brother, is that on standardized tests, being a iconoclast doesnt make you smarter than anyone else. Its tantamount if not LOWER than stupid to the 10th power. I learned that the hard way, and my next test comes oct. Im hoping top score a 2200 on that one. Remmember that the SAT does not care who you are or what you think. Just do what is told in the least amount of time possible and your set. Its like a damn meat factory.

Yes, what you guys said are EXACTLY what I do on tests… you understood me perfectly. Hahaha, thanks for the input, Quix, AeroEngineer, and Ashraf!

If multiple choice isn’t really your thing…then you could read the question, think of your own answer, and then look at the answer choices…That way your “iconoclastic mind” wouldn’t get in the way. Try it on a practice test…

Don’t give up until you get the score you want…The world likes perseverant people
Since you’ve already shown you’re not a genius test taker (as you’re a genius at something else), the only thing left is to show you’re willing to work on it, and hopefully will make it to your goal.
While your parent is right, it is important to remember that testing is something completely achievable through merely effort without much intuitive intelligence.
