el bucle: I hope you don’t think the entire point of High School is to get into college. Surely you learned something in the past four years, not only random facts, but also, most importantly, how to think and how to learn. The latter two skills are the most important and will carry with you wherever you go and whatever you do. Furthermore, it’s more important what you do in college, not where you go. The skills built in High School will help you in whatever college you go to.

el_bucle, I’ve also been deferred. I feel numb and don’t know what to do. It’s not that I expected to get in, but I don’t know what this deferral means. What do they [Rice] want to know more? Certainly not my senior 2nd semester grades!

As for other CCers, please give me an advice of what I can do after getting deferred. I feel so frustrated. :(

I guess I can be the first to say DENIED. I’m not really upset, as I applied to Rice as it was the best Texas school. I already got into the University of Chicago, one of my two top choices, the other being MIT where I got deferred to March

JetX, I’m sorry for your deferral, but you do still have a chance at regular decision. I believe they do admit a decent percentage of deferred students after considering them against their regular decision candidates. Do a search on “deferral” or “deferred” on CC and you will find lots of good advice. Good luck, and don’t give up! :)

i was accepted.

:)

To those deferred:

Although not at Rice, I know of two other students who were deferred at Duke and Georgetown last year, and ended up at those schools. Granted, it was a frustrating spring in those households last year, but deferred is not a death sentence!!

So, knowing those families, I would think that whatever new news about your academics, ec’s, etc. would be important to forward to Rice. They are keeping your files for a reason - give them the reasons to revisit your files by demonstrating your continued interest in them. Remember, as the RD files get reviewed you’ll be compared against them, and demonstrated interest will continue to weigh in your favor. Since ID is not binding (meaning ID didn’t opportunity cost you anything), make them feel like your app went in early because you were anxious to attend Rice, not just as a strategy.

May you have better news in the spring!!

What does the email say? Does it start out with “Future Owls” something or other? My son is out of town, doesn’t have internet access and can’t be reached. His email is up on his computer and while I won’t read the email he got from Rice, I can see the Future Owls words. Is this good news?

The subject is “Your Interim Decision application”.

Future Owls is part of the header on the email. You’re gonna have to scroll down to see what the letter actually says.
