I'd rather be ashes than dust

Jack London once said “I’d rather be ashes than dust”

what do you guys think this means?

ashes are the result of fire, while dust is the result of accumulating dead skin. To me, it seems that ashes have a much more noble connotation. Kind of like, at the end of his life Jack London would like to look back on his life and see himself living like a blazing flame—and now at the end of his life he is reduced to a pile of ash—as opposed to, he was idle and didn’t live his life with purpose or didn’t live his life with “fire” and at the end of his life he was just a pile of dust which was not a result of a burnt out flame, but rather just a pile of untransformed dead skin. Just my two cents! Interesting inquiry renovatio!
