Hi! I’m Deanna and I’m a sophomore in the IDEAS (Integrated Degree in Engineering Arts and Sciences) Program at Lehigh. If you haven’t heard of this, ask me! (but actually, it’s the BEST!) I’m involved in club sports, Engineers without Borders, have multiple work studies and lots of experience with financial aid. If you’ve got any questions about the campus, school, or professors, shoot! If not, you can always take a look at my blog(which will be growing!):

Hi, I will be applying to Lehigh RD and thinking about applying to the IDEAS degree. Can you let me know what your stats where when you were accepted? Have you already started your engineering classes or are you still taking the basic ones. I am looking into Computer/Electrical engineering. What projects have you done with Engineers without Borders? Thank you for your time.

Also, after reading your blog regarding IDEAS. Do most of those students stay for the the 5th year to receive a degree in their engineering major and why would you not want to complete it in 4 years. What are the pros to apply to IDEAS?

Hey thanks for taking questions! I’m planning on applying to Lehigh ED (yay!) and hadn’t heard about this program. I’ve recently been toying with the idea of taking some engineering classes but I know that I won’t be applying to the school of engineering when I submit my application in two weeks because I know I just don’t have the grades to make it (freshman and sophmore year me was a terrible lazy little thing…)
I’m wondering if I could begin to pursue a degree in engineering arts and sciences if I’m not in the college of engineering. If I would have to be in the college of engineering, how difficult is it to transfer in once in CAS? I read your earliest blog post about your mission for self discovery and adventure and that is so what I want to be doing in college! Maybe I won’t be part of the IDEAS program but what it offers just sounds so appealing I’d love to explore more options around it. Thanks again for your time!

my stats for RD IDEAS…
AP Lit&comp, US Hist, 5 on both
Community College courses: Calc, chem, spanish 4, 5
SAT 1560 w/o writing
Varsity soccer

1 in class (but from a small school)

I was in NHS and had leadership positions in many clubs, and had a good deal of community service as well.

As per classes, most IDEAS students start taking engineering classes before the engineers do because we can skip some of the prereqs. I also had credit for intro chemistry which got rid of one of my requirements. With EWB I am currently in a project class, and we are doing research on Eco-Stoves to eventually build one and write a manual for others. Typically, most IDEAS majors do NOT stay for the fifth year, as often they will get job offers right out of college if they want them, and if they don’t want them many go right into grad school instead of staying the fifth year (I don’t know too much about that yet as I’m not thinking too hard about it). Hope that helps!

I picked IDEAS because I didn’t want to do strictly engineering. If you are interested in taking some engineering courses, it certainly wouldn’t hope to try for ideas. The ideas degree is split almost evenly, requiring 36credits in both arts and sciences and engineering, but that doesn’t account for other humanities requirements and the like, so this would definitely be a cool option for you to think about it. (For example, the advisor is a mechanical/electrical/biomedical engineer who is also a sociologist! He’s really awesome!) I’m not exactly sure about transferring INTO RCEAS, but I know that switching to arts and sciences is supposed to be pretty easy. I would recommend talking to your advisor about that, as the freshmen advisors know a lot about how transferring colleges would work. (A side note, if you got here in CAS and decided that maybe you’d want to try ideas, you CAN talk to the advisors and ask about switching in. - if you don’t like it, some people switch out by the next semester!). Just a couple thoughts, hope that helps!

Hi Deanna! Thanks for taking questions! I want to be a civil engineer, but also want to pursue Classics(Latin) in college. Is the IDEAS degree held to the same regard as a regular B.S in just civil engineering when applying to grad school or looking for a job? Thanks!

Sorry, I also meant to ask is the engineering degree ABET certified? And if not, is it relatively easy to get a certified B.S?

Reading your blog, I realized that I might have seen you at the ASME Tear Down! I think I was in the other group though. We were working on the air pump, I couldn’t tell what it was you guys had but I saw a really long chain haha. It was a fun event though. I’m a freshman MechE and loving it so far. As someone who has to go through registration next week, do you have any helpful tips?

Easy question first: IDEAS is NOT ABET certified, but some IDEAS students will be able to get a certified degree in their four years if they choose to- otherwise it is very easy to finish up the degree in a fifth year. That being said, many students DON"T do this, as they find they don’t need it :)

As to your questions about civE and Classics- That is definitely the kind of thing that you see IDEAS majors doing- but to be clear, the key to IDEAS is that you have to want to integrate. If you don’t have any desire to do that, then I would recommend looking at the Arts and Engineering Program (a double major) or getting a minor. If you do want to integrate, IDEAS is the place to be! (For example, I’m doing mechanics, something artsy on the science side, and minoring in Spanish- I’m minoring in it because I don’t think I could directly integrate Spanish and mechanics).

Hope that helps!

haha cool! I was working on a drill- which was AWESOME to take apart might I add. Anyway, registration for your spring semester should be alright for you- your advisor (if you haven’t met with them already) will be able to give you just about every course you need to take. My spring semester freshman year I took Mech003, but I"m not sure if that is ahead of schedule for the typical ME major or not. If you’re looking for an elective of some sort- I’d look into ENGR 98, Silicon, Styrofoam, or Steel- the professor is great and it’s a really cool class. Also, it gives you some great insight for when you get into Mech012. (Oh, you also get some really sweet software for your computer for free…)

Sounds neat! I’ll look into it. I have a pretty good idea what I want to take, I’m just worried I won’t get the right sections. Have you had ME 104 or MAT 33 yet? I will probably have them next fall, but I’m just curious what you thought of them.

I got accepted into IDEAS this year and had a question about the college I’m placed in
On common app, I applied for Arts and Sciences (undecided) but in my portal it says “Welcome to PC Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science.”
I went back to double check my common app to make sure I wasn’t remembering things weird, and I found a thing that said "Please be aware that if admitted to either IBE or IDEAS, your area of focus will match your choice from the “intended college” "
I dont understand any part of that last sentence. What does that mean? If I’m undecided how can I have an area of focus? What school would i be attending?? I called the admissions office and she just gave me the email of my area’s representative but I would like to try to resolve this problem before contacting him
Hi Wungles! First, congrats on getting into IDEAS this year! As per your “attending college” that’s not something you really need to worry about with IDEAS. For me, I switched back and forth between colleges for different semesters- it doesn’t actually make a difference. Because you are in IDEAS, you are sort of enrolled in “both” colleges, and you take a mix of classes between the two. Being in either college won’t affect you at all. They tend to just throw half of the IDEAS kids into A&S, and half into RCEAS. You can certainly contact your rep if you are worried about it though. Hope that helps, and congrats again!
How do you know you’ve been admitted into IDEAS? I applied on the common app to the “5 Year Arts Engineering Program” and I have acceptances to both schools on my portal. I thought this meant I applied to IDEAS, but did I actually apply into the Arts Engineering Program instead?
Yes, the Arts/Engineering program is different from IDEAS. On the common App, IDEAS is listed separately and you wouldn’t have been considered from the program without selecting this option.
