Ideas for a decorative recipe box

So I got an interesting request from D1 tonight. She is moving into her first apartment next month. She will be home for Thanksgiving and wants to spend some time going through some of my recipes and making copies to take with her. She wants me to get a recipe card box (index card box), and make it ‘pretty and cute’. I told her I could probably find a cute one somewhere, that lots of little boutiques and gift shops have that kind of thing; then she fessed up that it’s something she wants me to give to her. So I called her on being sentimental, and she fessed up.

So now I feel like I should attempt to be creative, and I’m sure there’s someone on CC who has done this sort of project. I’d appreciate some creative ideas.

You could get decoupage glue and decoupage some sort of pictures your daughter likes onto the box. It could be food related pictures, something she likes, family pictures, pictures of her. Or how sentimental do you want to go? If you have family pictures of ‘food’ holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, Birthdays (including of family and food that is traditional to your family) -maybe those would be a fun and sentimental thing to decorate the box with.

I have a tea pot and cups with a pretty pansy design and it had matching paper napkins available so I used those to decoupage a tray to go with the tea pot.

I have an old shelf unit glass storage jars that have wooden lids. I don’t use them any more so have been thinking of painting them my daughter’s school colors and decoupaging them with school related stuff for her. Not sure if she will like them but it would be fun for me!

OK… so she started looking online and found this one:

I just realized I have a ton of rubber stamps! I could come up with something similar, at least color schemes (since she obviously likes these). Then I could decoupage on top for texture and protection. I’d also thought about putting her name on it somewhere.

Would a 3 hole binder format be handy? Many times I am printing a recipe from an email or from a website that I would like to save. The recipe boxes are cute though. Is there a cute format for a binder?

Not a recipe box but I just made a cookery book filled with our family’s favorite recipes at tastebook.com. for my D’s. You can enter your own recipes or download from most cooking sites and can choose a cover and a write your own short dedication on the front page. It was very prompt; they have a turnaround time of just a few days and it looks exceptional. Plus you can keep buying extra recipe pages of your choice to insert in the binder. Well I started them off with 50 recipes and hopefully they will keep adding to it.
