A close friend (60 year old male) is having surgery next week that will keep him in the hospital for several days then will be pretty much confined to bed for about a month. I’m trying to figure out something fun or useful to send him (he lives across the country from us).

This is a contradiction in terms. Get the guy a Zen, because if he happens not to like the music you put on it for him, at least he can listen to the radio. Plus, they’re cheaper.

(not trying to bash iPod products, just saying that they don’t give the biggest bang for your buck.)

Judging from your screen name I gather that you either live in New York or Los Angeles. So, with that in mind: one or two delivery meals. Maid service (if he doesn’t have a housekeeper) one or two times. A Clapper (no, that…you know, clap on clap off). Depending on the city (we live in a small town in the middle of Los Angeles), contact the library. Some have a service where they will deliver books. Or: a gift certificate to Amazon: he can order books and they will be delivered.

Sorry, out here Inthebiz kinda means one thing, but no matter. Another reason for asking/assuming is I know certain availabilities in LA or NY. But, some of the stuff I suggested is certainly (I hope) available where friend lives.

I hope, in any case, that you found inspiration here. And wishing your friend a speedy recovery.
