We are looking to get away with our kids (in their 20s) for a few days Christmas week. Would love to go to a hotel that has a wonderful indoor pool with atmosphere, shows at night, and things doing during the day. I know this is a lot to ask but I am calling on CC wisdom for ideas. As you know, it is challenging to travel with kids who are young adults and try to find a place that satisfies all.

No indoor pool, and in Green point area of Brooklyn but very very cool vibe and absolutely lovely:The Box House Hotel. Stayed there in July and loved it.

A good travel site such as Trip Advisor will lay out features and pricing. They also have info on hip hotels. In the past haven’t you wanted inexpensive? That needs research to make it fit for you. In general people on budgets look at the outlying areas. Stamford CT and Newark are on transp lines.

A hotel with a pool and shows at the hotel at night? Vegas.

Agreed Atlantic City would work. The casino hotels have shows and some might have indoor pools.

How much do you want to spend per night? That week between Christmas and New Years is an expensive one at most hotels. Hotels in Atlantic City…would be upward of $150-200 a night.

I thought thumper1’s number was too low, so I checked expedia. As it turned out, Christmas week is a low week, most hotels are discounting their prices, you can get a room at Borgata for 140, down from 538.

Mohonk is gorgeous, but expensive for a family on a budget. I wouldn’t be spending my time at the hotel; I’d be in the City, so I’d look for an inexpensive place with a pool within easy commuting distance of the train. Stamford (CT) is okay, and the commute from Jersey isn’t bad either, but I prefer NY. If you take the Metro North out of Grand Central as far north as it will go (Poughkeepsie), you’ll be 2 hours north of Manhattan so hotels will be cheaper. The Culinary Institute is right there – the food is delicious – and there are 3 large colleges within a 20 minute drive, so there are a variety of hotels in the area. The local historic houses (Vanderbilt, Morse, Roosevelt…) have holiday events and we always stop there on our way north to the ski areas Upstate.

I was at Mohonk for a company retreat. The setting and spa were great, but the hotel was dark and a bit spooky to me. They were in the process of remodeling the place, but if you were to get one of those dark, original rooms, it is kind of depressing. There would be no show or much of entertainment at night. When we were there, there were a lot of outdoor activities, but it maybe too cold in the winter.

I vote for Atlantic City. Nice hotels, nightlife, good restaurants. But I suppose it depends on what your kids like to do. Outdoor recreation? Go upstate New York. Clubbing? Atlantic City.

Questbest, ^^^that is a good question - what types of activities do your kids enjoy??? Just being honest, I have two 20-somethings - while it could be an option I’d have to say that swimming an indoor pool would not be the first thing on their list to do. But maybe it is for your children!

I might recommend a suite style stay someplace. Like an Embassy Suites. The extra room and room space is great for people on different sleep schedules, you can even enjoy a movie in the “living room”, the free cooked to order breakfast is nice, usually plenty of comfortable lobby space for those who might want to get out of the room or catch up on some computer work. Most have an indoor pool.

Have you checked Hotwire??? If you narrow down an area and do a Hotwire search for your dates, area, even suite style or whatever other amenities you want, you can find some great prices. Use betterbidding.com to try and figure out which hotel you are looking at. It’s a good way to book a room for someone on a budget.

I just have to say that my kids, in their early 20’s, were not impressed with AC, but never tire of NYC. I’m going to throw this one out as a wild idea: stayed at the White Plains Crowne Plaza on business. Beautiful indoor pool, across from the upscale Westchester Mall, about an hour into the city via public transp. You can go to a matinee show. Even with a nighttime performance you should still be able to get transp back to the hotel. Rates not bad.

But really, first choice is the City itself.

Short Hills Hilton. 5 star hotel, across street from one of ritziest malls in the US. without traffic, it’s 30 minutes to lower manhattan via Holland Tunnel and 40 minutes to midtown via Lincoln.

The kind of thing the OP describes sounds like Vegas and Atlantic City to me, too. Not too likely to find a place with shows at night elsewhere, at least not in the winter. Really, staying in NYC sounds better if you want easy access to a variety of quality entertainment of all kinds and lots to do.

You might look into the casinos in CT, although they are a bit farther away than 2 hours.

Frankly, it doesn’t sound like something a 20-something would be interested in. NYC, yes.

Bear Mountain is near the Storm King outdoor sculpture museum, a place I love. I have no idea if it is open at that time of year, though. It’s close enough to go into the city for a matinee or something.

Parking at Port Authority- $35. Chelsea Piers - 6 hours $50. So if the idea is to drive into NYC, factor it in. Someone may have a less expensive idea but I’d hope it’s central enough.

I honestly don’t know why one would target “near NYC” unless the City is on the agenda. Or unless it really is about AC. I’ve done the Woodstock Inn in VT, at Christmas.

Otoh, Bear Mtn looks great- looks like some dates then are booked.
