Related to my other post: I need some ideas for graduation gifts for my DD21. She is an adventurer, and all she cares about is traveling, so our big gift to her is going to be a significant amount of money with which to buy plane or train tickets. But I need a couple of other ideas for gifts that she will keep, hopefully, well into her old age. My parents, my sister and my son are hitting me up for ideas, so the pressure is on. My daughter can sometimes be not-so-careful, so I’m hoping to avoid things that can get lost (jewelry), or that will get used up or outdated.
I posted in another thread about getting her a framed print of her campus. Other ideas:
-a good jewelry box? which one?
-a travel book along the lines of “Places to See Before You Die” (is there a better one?)
Our kiddo was given a really nice diploma frame by theniffice at her university where she worked. If she had not gotten that, we would have given it to her…because she wanted it.
Our gift to both of our kids was repayment of their student loans…it’s an everlasting gift…or so they tell us!
What about opening up a Roth IRA for her?
I just have to ask…if she is inclined to lose jewelry and jewelry isn’t a good gift…why would she want a jewelry box?
She does have a few pieces of good jewelry and a LOT of costume jewelry. I’m thinking that a good jewelry box might be something she would appreciate more as the years go on while also reducing her proclivity for losing stuff by giving her a dedicated place she WANTS to put it? Not totally sold on that idea though. Just a thought.
An inexpensive gift idea…I asked both kids to send me a bunch of college photos (from facebook, their phones etc.) and then I made an album of their college years on Snapfish (there are other similar services too). Kind of their own personal college yearbook. I’m not the most technically savvy so it took me a little bit of time to do but it was fun. I’ve seen both kids taking the album out to look through it once in a while.
Great ideas so far. What about a few/some shares in a stock of a company that has meaning to your daughter? Maybe something travel related. Otherwise, jewelry (I did note what you wrote above though) – is your D the kind who would wear a ring all the time? One of mine has a ring she never takes off and the other has a necklace that she very rarely takes off. Not much opportunity to lose them. Will she be getting an apartment? Maybe something for the apartment that is lasting? Not thinking of a good example of what that would be at the moment…if she’s a beer drinker, maybe a nice set of steins. Or, if she’s a wine drinker, a nicer set of wine glasses?
