We are heading to Maine at the end of June. We have never been there before so we are looking for some fun stuff to do and see for 3 days. No kiddos just hubby and myself. Hiking is out as I am currently in a cast so will just be back to walking. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
I would recommend Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. There are about 40 miles of carriage roads, built by John Rockefeller in the early 1900s, that are perfect for easy walking if you’re up for it. There are beautiful views of the ocean, lakes, woods, etc. You can stay in Bar Harbor if you like a lot of activity, or on the “quiet side” of the island if you prefer more solitude. Bar Harbor has lots of shops and restaurants to enjoy.
We like to stay at the Seacroft Inn. It’s right in town, and just a couple of minutes walk from the shore. It’s not fancy, but the prices are really reasonable, considering the location. We like it because we don’t have to worry about parking, which can be a pain in town.
LL Bean sponsors a free bus that will take you all over the island.
Views from the top of Cadillac Mountain can’t be beat! You can drive up there.
We have lived in Maine for 32 years and still haven’t run out of things to do on Mt. Desert Island!
This is my “go to” vacation spot whenever we have family or friends visit us. Of course, there are lots of other amazing places. Portland is a fun city itself! Other nice towns are Ogunquit, Camden, and Boothbay Harbor.
Let me know if you have questions about Maine. I love talking about it.
Have you picked an area to focus on or is that what you are looking for?
The midcoast Maine area has a lot to do - Boothbay Harbor, Rockport/Camden area, Georgetown area:
Beaches - Reid State Park, 1/2 Mile Beach and Mile Beach
Scenic walks - Ocean Point, Boothbay Botanical Garden
Museums - Farnsworth and numerous galleries
Kayaking, whale and puffin watches, day trip to Monhegan Island
Lobster/Seafood eating
- try Red’s Eats on your way in or out in Wiscasset, Five Islands Lobster Pound
Just a few ideas to get you started. Once you have a place in mind, I can chime in with more.
I second Bar Harbor - we have gone the past few years. We don’t hike, but love the drive through Arcadia. We also enjoy hanging on the beach area in the park. We stay at the west street hotel - expensive but great location and amenities. Love walking around the town and also driving around the island (to the other small towns).
Boothbay Harbor’s Windjammer Days! Festival is June 25-28… While there might be some hub-bub downtown at the harbor, there is plenty to do in quieter areas, too – as already mentioned, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and a visit to Ocean Point, but also the Maine State Aquarium, whale watches and other boat tours, 2 or 3 hour sailing trips, art galleries, etc, etc…
Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are OK, too
Thanks for such great suggestions. Has anybody done the Cabbage Island Claim bake in Booth Bay Harbour. It is 3 hrs from Bar Harbour and was wondering if it was worth the drive?
We are camping in Bar Harbour with our camper.
For Bar Harbor we were thinking the Acadia National Bus tour and the LuLu boat tour. Any opinions on those??
I am so excited to see Maine!!
Before you head from Bar Harbor to any points like Ogunquit, you may want to check local effects of the series of Nor’easters. The Marginal Way in Perkins Cove is apparently closed , as a large portion of it was destroyed and it is no longer safe. (My family camp is inland, folks are there now opening up, I am not from “away”!! ) Maine is beautiful! Have fun!
^Oh, that’s too bad about Marginal Way. I didn’t know that!
You could go to Boothbay Harbor on your way to or from Bar Harbor.
I wouldn’t drive 3 hours down from Bar Harbor and 3 hours back just for the Cabbage Island Clam Bake (although I haven’t actually done the clam bake myself). Rather, depending on what your overall itinerary is and how you are traveling to and from Maine, I would plan to spend some time in Boothbay Harbor on your way to or from Bar Harbor, as MaineLonghorn has suggested (assuming you are traveling by car, even if you are flying in to Portland and renting a car there; if you are flying to Bangor or Ellsworth, then that’s a different story).
That is terrible news about the Marginal Way. I was just going to suggest Ogunquit, as one of my favorite places to go. Acadia National Park is awesome as is Boothbay Harbor. There is a good amount of walking for the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. The drive up the Main Coast is awesome, lots of places to stop incuding the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. . Portland is very nice city to visit as well. The art museum is quite good, the Portland Headlight across from the city itself is nice spot for a morning or afternoon visit. In Bar Harbor itself I would recommend a boat ride in which you can see the “cottages”.
We always make our “bathroom stop” on the drive to Bar Harbor at Freeport and visit the LL Bean stores and have lunch at one of the places in town (It is also the home to a million outlet stores)…
Ok think we might have come up with a schedule with everyone’s suggestions.
We are from NC so were going to drive to Lancaster PA and visit the Amish for a day which is about 9 hrs from home. Then were driving to Falmouth by Martha Vineyard and staying 2 days exploring Martha Vineyard.
Then were checking out and heading to Portland for the day and then going to Bar Harbor and going to stay 2 days there doing Acardia beach and touring and next day taking a sight seeing boat tour and visiting all the yummy restaurants and shopping of course .
Then we are checking out and heading to Boothbay harbor and doing the Clam bake and exploring for a day. Next day we are going to start heading home with with a stop at The Natural Bridge in VA for 2 days.
Oh my getting tired just trying this very busy schedule. :)) Keep those suggestion coming as we have never visited Maine before. Thanks!!
