My DD will be attending graduate school for Speech-Language Pathology and I would like to get her a stylish, professional and functional messenger bag to hold books, files, pc, and other supplies for grad school and clinic.Any suggestions are appreciated.

Plus any other ideas for gifts that grandparent/aunts could get her. Thank you!

Congrats to your daughter. Is she going to bike to her school? Does she like messenger bags? I’m asking because my kiddos would not be caught dead with a messenger bag. Backpacks or totes are what they like.

Congratulations to your daughter and you! D and I both use Timbuk2 bags. I don’t know if they would be considered ‘stylish’ but they are very functional and they hold a lot. They also have lots of pockets. I have used mine for six years and it still looks great. It is loaded full most days. There is also a laptop version, but I just keep my laptop in a padded sleeve.
ETA: I also love that it keeps everything dry when it is raining/snowing. And they are made in San Francisco. :)

Years back I got my son the Levenger bomber leather messenger bag. He lives locally and runs a men’s book club. My son asked for one, so I fugure that was the norm where he worked. Now he is back to bookbag.

OP, did your DD ask for a messenger bag? You don’t want to spend the $ unless you know she will use it.

Get something lightweight. I would suggest a Longchamps tote if you want to spend over $100. It will be large enough to hold anything she needs.

I like the look of the Levenger leather bag, but when packed full, it weighs a ton.

You might want to let your daughter pick this out herself. As a speech path, I never used a large bag…not ever.

ETA…regarding “other things”…I would give her cash. That way she can get the things she wants and needs herself.

Having the right kind of bag is so important for function - which has been shown OVER and OVER here on CC with many threads spent helping a fellow CC member find the right bag! That said, I too agree that none of my kids (or myself) would want a messenger over a backpack. Given the input above, at the very least have a conversation with her if you already haven’t about which she would prefer - tote, messenger or backpack. If I was buying one for someone else I would also want to know what “fabric” or colors they preferred - again, to me a bag is SO personal! Leather, nylon, or cloth??? Black only or a true color???
