My son is transferring this year. He has a couple of good acceptances that he is seriously considering. However, we just learned today that NYU does not send out admission info for transfer students until after May 1. Both the university admissions office and a secretary in the music department said that there were no options, although we explained that he needs to let the other schools to which he’s been admitted know by May 1.

I’m wondering if anyone has run into this situation before? I don’t know if this is unique to NYU (it’s the only school that it happened with for us). Any ideas? Thanks.

It is kind of a similar situation to being on a waiting list. I would suggest picking out his top choice from among those where he has already been accepted. Explain the situation to them and see if they will grant an extension beyond May 1. If they agree, get it in writing and he is in good shape. If they do not agree, then he can still send in an acceptance to that school. If NYU does not accept him, so be it. If NYU does accept him, he could still go to NYU if you are willing to forfeit the deposit sent in with the acceptance to the other school. Admissions offices do not appreciate this, but they cannot force your son to attend their school and they even have a term for this phenomenon - “summer melt”. Be aware that this could be held against him should he want to attend grad school at the college where the deposit was lost.

By the way, I would like to include any acceptances to schools where he would be a music major (even ones he would not be attending) over at the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/1260441-master-list-music-school-acceptances-fall-2012-a-49.html and would appreciate details concerning the major and the instument he plays or voice if he sings.

Thanks for your thoughts, BassDad. It really was helpful to us to think about it like a waiting list situation. I actually ended up writing to the chair of the music department and he replied very kindly saying that he appreciated knowing about this issue and that he’ll poke around for us a bit for some info. While acceptance is pretty unlikely, it’d be great to know earlier rather than later! Again, thanks for your ideas - we have taken them very seriously.
