DS would love to find a seasonal job for his Christmas break 12/15/16 to 1/8/17. Any ideas what to look for besides the Amazon fulfillment center or childcare?
UPS, local shops that amp up their businesses during the holidays, catering companies. Have her brainstorm any type of business that will be busier during the holidays and need extra employees short term. Any big retailers in your area like Nordstrom, mall stores, Target, etc.
Sell some unneeded family items on eBay or a local FB selling (garage sale) site. Easy to do from home and within that very limited time.
Any retailer at a mall would probably be hiring seasonal help. Target also hires seasonal workers but the hours are usually later shifts.
That’s only four weeks.
Any chance your son worked someplace near your home before he left for college? My kids found they were able to pick up work at their summer jobs during their holiday breaks. The regular staff wanted some holiday time off…and the business owners didn’t have to train my kids to do the job.
Any chance you have neighbors going away who need a house and/or pet sitter? One of my kids never had trouble finding this either…and our neighborhood is small.
One of my daughters worked at World Market during a few holiday seasons.
Do you live near any big box stores? Have your kiddo go to each one…although I think a lot of places do online applications.
There was a sign at our Target advertising for seasonal help.
Flower shops are often desperate for an extra pair of hands around that time. Also, I was noticing some local Craiglist posts for Edible arrangements and Honeybaked hams looking for temp help.
Target is hiring seasonal employees-you can apply online. Some Nordstroms are-D’s friend just got a position, and she was able to apply online and do a phone interview from her college town. We were recently at the mall and I swear every single store had a “help wanted” sign in the window. Tell him to check Craigslist too-Christmas tree lots, caterers and other businesses that are busy for the holidays are advertising there in our area.
Target and Wal-Mart are in heated competition, with Wal-Mart vowing to increase the quality of the customer experience. Both are hiring lots of temporary seasonal workers to increase customer service during the peak shopping and returns season.
Thanks for the replies. I did check out Craigslist and sent him some ideas–valet, food delivery (Uber for food), other warehouse help, pet care, etc. working on a retail sales floor is one step short of torture to him, but he needs to hustle now to have any other options. His summer job won’t work now.
S2 started at Kohl’s last week. His long-term job ended after the election, and he has a few resumes out for “real” jobs that aren’t going to ripen before the new year. At least this keeps him in gas money and student loan payments for the interim so he doesn’t have to hit his savings.
Catering party help, babysitting, camp counselor for school break camps.
Around here…school break is just the week between Christmas and New Years…no school camps!
But catering businesses need help.
DS worked at Crate & Barrel one winter, primarily restocking the shelves. He was amazed at the variety of stemware.
My daughter worked at Toys R Us, and Macys last break.
Did your kids put in their applications at Thanksgiving break for when they came home?
That is definitely the plan. Not sure if he has yet or will for Christmas break employment. He has set up an interview for a summer internship however. That one really is more important.
D’s friends have been applying online from college if possible. Some have been in contact with their summer employers and picking up holiday hours. D lucked out and got a winter break job with our local government through someone who knows someone. She was interviewed over the phone, but they knew her from visits to the office where her father works.
