Looking for trip and service project ideas for 8 young women, ages 17-18. Anywhere that is decent and safe to stay, with a project involving either children, eco-systems, or…I don’t know…

Probably sometime in June or July, 5-7 days, either a place that is cheap to fly to, or easy to drive to from the NYC area (like 5 to 6 hours drive). The group of 8 girls and 4 moms would travel together.

Maine, Vermont, Virginia, etc. etc.

Thank you!!!

You couldn’t find a project in NYC?

It’s just that the girls have decided that they would like to experience something different. (not in NYC). Also, they have saved money for a trip, and would like it to be service-oriented, if possible.

New Orleans. Not in the geographical area you suggest, but recent pics from there show an area still desperate for help.

Are they willing to do construction or rebuilding work? There are communities in NH & VT that are still rebuilding from Hurricane Irene that could likely use help. Willingness to hang sheetrock and paint would be greatly appreciated.

This report lists many local agencies that might be worth contacting:

You might consider contacting this church in VT for some other ideas:

check out youthworks.com

I agree with NOLA as a suggestion too.if you check with your church/temple they may have current projects.

It doesn’t have to be all about NOLA. I am going w my church youth group to NC next week to work in an area flooded by Hurricane Irene. Our church youth group travels every summer to NW NJ to work on houses owned by the elderly or infirmed that without our help would need to give up their houses. Frankly, there’s likely service work that can be done in every town in the US if you look for it.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I will look into all the suggested sites.

We would rather not spend $350 per person on airfare, which is what it will be at the very least during the summer. Fares are through the roof. And in some ways it defeats the purpose…

Habitat for humanity has local builds and some builds only women i believe

Perhaps too far afield, but thought I’d throw it out there. Staying in Antigua, Guatemala, and working in a village with a family to build a house was a wonderful experience, and airfare when I went was reasonable, same as a domestic ticket.

Do you like hiking or the outdoors? The Appalachian Mountain Club is looking for trail crew volunteers:

If you want to save up, this would be a great service vacation to consider in future years. (I have stayed in Cinnamon Bay w a Boy Scout troop and spent a day with this crew leader. Beautiful setting!)
