My DD is a teacher in NYC certified in special ed and gen ed for grades 1-6. She is interested in going abroad this summer to work with children on their English skills or in any other capacity where she could share her knowledge as a teacher.

She would love to travel in a group with other like-minded people who want to help others.

She found a trip to Africa but she would have to pay $30000 to go. She would prefer a trip where she would have to pay less or none…or possibly one with a salary.

My D recently got a brochure form CIEE about teaching abroad opportunities. She had done a study abroad through them before. I recycled it because she has a job, but you could look into it. It may have been for a full year though.

If she has a target country, one option would be to contact the Education Officer at the closest consulate of that country, and ask about short-term educational exchanges for teachers. I also understand that the Peace Corps has some short-term assignments for people with a certain number of years of professional experience. She could contact them for further information.

There are a bunch of teach english abroad programs all over the world for the summer - check them out on-line -they require teacher certification. I believe they are paying jobs.

MASA in Israel - although I’m not sure if this is for the summer or more extended. Scroll this page - many teaching internships, including for Special Ed and for refugees from Africa to Israel, and more.

^Oh I’m sorry, from this part of their website it seems these are 5-month internships, not just the summer. I’ll leave it up anyway, just for information’s sake or possible future reference after your D graduates.

Note that these are paying internships – not the other way around.

Here’s another way. Through Israel’s Save-A-Child’s-Heart Foundation, families come from all over the developing world for pediatric heart operations in Israel, using equipment and medical training not available in their countries of origin.

The surgery and recovery process takes 2-3 months per child; meanwhile the whole family (including siblings) live in housing nearby.

Volunteers help the children and their families cope through the long time period. Evidently they want people to structure activitires for to occupy the children.

Every language around the globe may be spoken, so the communication goes on around the language barriers.

Perhaps an inquiry here might bear fruit. Ask too if the volunteers can find housing in the same place as the patients’ families.

Both China and Korea have summer language immersion camps, and need English speakers. Not sure if certification is needed. Something to google anyhow.

P3T, one D is on a Masa program in Israel this year, and having a wonderful time, teaching English, leading after school programs, and planting gardens.
