Ideas RE selling or trading in iphone 5

OK, so we have 4 Sprint iPhone 5 phones that are all working and in good condition–no water damage or scratches to glass. We are thinking of getting new phones are our holiday gift to the family and are also thinking about selling or trading in the existing iPhone 5. Just wondering about folks’ experiences on this. In the past, our old phones had virtually no trade in value, so we didn’t bother and have a significant collection of old phones around our home. Thanks!

We haven’t decided if we’re sticking with our existing carrier (Sprint), but probably aren’t. S is thinking of having us switch to a pre-paid plan with unlimited data and wants to be able to tether his phone for using other electornic devices. We haven;t decided what phones we want eitherh–expecting S to have strong oTphinions about this as well. Your thoughts, ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Gazelle. We know several folks who got really decent money from Gazelle for used IPhones.

If you have an Apple Store nearby you can buy your new phone there and sell them your old one (for Apple Store credit) all at the same time. I don’t know how competitive their buyback prices are, but you can’t beat the convenience.

I’ve had good luck buying and selling cell phones with Glyde.com.

I’ve sold phones and iPads to Gazelle. It was extremely easy and they have great customer service.

We got more $ from Verizon than from Gazelle.
My next phone is going to be a six plus, unless they come out with an upgrade before then.

I’d look up ebay, CL, and other places to see what the iphone 5 sells for in your area and sell it online/CL using those prices as a guide.

Apple’s buyback prices aren’t very competitive. A friend who tried trading in his 2 year old device ended up only getting 10% credit towards a new device…that’s around 25 bucks. He ended up getting 4-5 times that selling it off on CL himself.

Apple store offered $60 for an iphone 4, and $100 for a 4 with more memory. this was a few weeks ago.

We may back up the phones and have S help us find new homes for them. He tends to do very well with reselling items.

I traded in a three year old 4 or 4S (whichever phone was released fall of three years ago). Pristine condition. Received $100 or $115 at the Apple store toward purchase of new phone. (Traded in two others at same time but they were damaged. Damaged 4 was going to receive only $35.) The only somewhat disconcerting aspect was leaving the phone at the store and trusting that the back-up performed at home actually worked. It did, but the feeling was unnerving.

My kid is keeping her iphone4s…and is getting it unlocked for international travel use.

I sold my basic iphone4 for $65 at Gazelle a few months ago. I didn’t shop around for a best price. One caution, Gazelle made a mistake and initially claimed its value was almost nothing after I sent it in. I had to email back and asked them to check again.

More recently, I sold my MacBooks through Apple sponsored site PowerOn Services. They give out gift cards to be used at Apple store. I plan to use it to buy an apple watch.

Apple’s next phone may have a mechanism that makes the phone to land at a certain spot to prevent breakage when you drop. I am waiting for that to come to upgrade.

The iPhones are retaining high resale value on EBay. I thought I could pick up a few old ones to use with my security camera app (manything) and was surprised at the asking prices. We’re going to hang on to our old ones when the upgrade window opens up.
