Identity

Do people at Cornell identify more with their respective school or the university as a whole. When people refer to an alumni network, does it really only matter if that alumni went to your school or do people feel pretty connected on campus regardless of which school they take classes in?

People are definitely identify more with the school as a whole. That can be said for pretty much everyone except hotellies. This is because they have their own niche network that is very focused, while all of the other schools at Cornell have many different majors, etc (for the most part). Hotellies are also in more of a high school type environment where everyone knows everyone else in their classes. It is a good thing for making the campus feel smaller and networking. Sometimes I’m jealous that I’m not a hotellie.

jcas forgot about ILRies, because some of the stuff he said about the Hotel School apply to ILR as well.

I feel more connected to ILR than the university as a whole. But if I were to meet an alumni from another school, I would probably still feel a connection there. I guess it also depends on the type of major you are. I’d probably feel more connected to an alumnus/alumna that was doing something in business as opposed to one that was a doctor or something like that.

yeah I am applying to ILR, but this is interesting. Would you say ILRies, specifically, are more isolated than other schools?

ILRies tend to hang out with each other.

One other quick ILR specefic question…is Ives Hall (main ILR building correct?) centrally located? I remember hearing/reading that was brand new and very nice…is this correct?

yes, pull up a map online

when somebody asks you where you go to school do you say Cornell or ILR? For instance, people at Wharton would most likely say Wharton as they identify more with Wharton than Penn itself.

Ya ILR is definitely tight knit. I guess the only way that ILR networking is exclusive would be in HR and unions…and mayyybe law. I haven’t really seen examples of other exclusiveness tho. That’s not to say ILR as a school is exclusive…b/c it isn’t at all. It’s just a smallish school so you all know eachother and Ives is like ur home at Cornell. But we def say we go to Cornell…no Wharton bs here. Cornell pride!

and yes it’s EXTREMELY centrally located and it’s a very nice new building w/ a great library

AND ILR profs won the halloween contest! They dressed up as Toy Story! One big fam part of the extended Cornell family.

we say Cornell … why does it matter?
