Ok, need help again. I filed the profile (fafsa too). At the end of the profile, it is stated that some of the schools required further documentation to be sent to IDOC. So, I clicked that link on, but it mentions in its checklist of items, the 2006 return, which we have not completed yet. When I went to one of the college websites, they mentioned sending the 2005 return to IDOC. So, I guess I will call the schools directly, but if anyone has any info on this, please respond. Thanks

IDOC wants both 2005 & 2006 returns. PROFILE asks for info on both years, and because the schools do 100% verification, they request actual returns from both years.

So, since IDOC advises not to send in your material unless it is complete, that means I can’t send in the 2005 return and other stuff until I have the 2006? thanks

That’s right … hold off until you have everything you need. You’ll have to send it all in a packet with a cover sheet. My daughter has two IDOC schools, and the packets have to be sent in separate envelopes (one for each school). Watch your due date. One of my daughter’s schools needs the IDOC submitted by 2/15 — it’s coming fast!

what happensif your 2006 1040 will not be dome by the deadline? Should I send 2005 now and 2006 later?

IF your are the parent of an entering freshman, you should really push to get the fa information in ontime. Financial aid policies vary from school to school so make sure you know the policies at the school that your student is applying to .

Keep in mind that even schools with the deepest pockets, set financial aid budgets and you don’t want your kid to be at the end of the line when it comes to giving out money (remember the process is still moving forward without your paperwork).

At other schools if you are late with your paperwork you could be out of the money and get a package which is heavier on loans because all of the grant aid will have been disbursed. Still at other schools, if there is not enough money left to meet your need, it could be a denial in admissions.

kelsmom - is that 2/15 a postmark date or a received date?
If received - at the school or at IDOC?

Help me rhonda to get taxes done that fast!

I just looked at the IDOC instructions. It says that info must be RECEIVED by IDOC by March 1. That is probably why the school info says send by 2/15 — that way, it will be there on time. IDOC info all has to be sent at one time, with the completed cover sheet, to the IDOC processor, separate envelope for each school that requires IDOC. Some schools that use PROFILE want IDOC, which cuts down on the amount of paperwork the school itself has to handle/review/file. I assume they pay IDOC service to do all of that. Other schools using PROFILE require tax returns & W-2s, but they want them sent to the school. Your CSS account will list your schools along with codes that tell you what each school wants. You then have to go to each school to get the dates. It’s a pain!

for MIT, it’s actually receipt date 2/15, idk if it’s IDOC or MIT receipt date though

When it asks for the tax return, does it mean…the whole thing, like all 30 or whatever pages?

for mit it states the following:

<a href=“MIT Student Financial Services”>MIT Student Financial Services;

I would take it to mean that MIT your documentation by this deadline.

Check with the individual school. Using MIT again as an example, they require the following:

Err on the side of caution since it takes a few days for the profile and the fafsa to be uploaded, make sure you have done that part asap. Remember you your idoc sheet comes with prewritten information (most likely coming from the profile) so if you don’t have the profile, you will not be able to pull your idoc sheets.

why do they ask you to send 1 envelope for each school? isn’t the whole purpose of IDOC to send just ONE set of returns so they can verify the info you provided on the profile and send confirmations to schools?

In response to kelsmom’s post, I don’t believe that IDOC in general wants both 2005 and 2006 returns. Most schools want the 2006 return if at all possible. For example, Yale’s website says explicitly that it wants 2006 tax returns sent to IDOC by March 10. They only want 2005 tax returns if it is impossible to prepare 2006 tax returns by march 10, and in that case, they want the tax returns sent directly to Yale, not to IDOC.

Of course, you should check with each individual school on what they want, but I do not believe that as a general rule IDOC expects you to send in both 2005 and 2006 returns. Maybe there are some schools that want both tax returns through IDOC, but this is not a universal practice.

thanks for the info
