IE vs. BioE

Between IE and BioE, which field has a better future?
I mean the demand; and which one is more versatile?

http://career.berkeley.edu/Major/IEOR.stm

http://career.berkeley.edu/Major/Bioengr.stm

You really need to decide which field you like better. BioE will be more research based (hence the many students in the Berkeley link who will be headed off to grad school) and the IE program will be more business based (only 10 % attending grad school vs 47% for BioE).

Seriously don’t major in BioE for the prospects. It’s not something you can half-ass. It’s hard, it’s very math intensive, it’s not plug and chug work because most work in BioE is original.

It depends on what type of IE you’re talking about. Those links are to UCB’s IEOR program, which is much more heavy toward the OR side. Some of the more industrial programs have a less bright future. What school are you in?

Penn State

Well the three specialization tracks that are part of PSU’s IE program are

 1. Manufacturing Systems engineering
 2. engineering Service Systems
 3. engineering Information Systems

I heard, in PSU, regardless of the three tracks, OR courses are required during the senior year.
