IEOR, ORMS & Haas Questions

Hey all!

I am an EEP major in CNR and will be attending Berkeley this Fall. I have TONS of questions regarding the classes that I should be taking for first and second semester.

Some info about my plans: I want to switch my major to ORMS ASAP. I don’t plan on making the cut because I’ve been told its extremely difficult and only 25 people graduate with that major per year. Thus, I want to take overlapping classes so that if I don’t make it I can apply to IEOR. Also, by the end of sophomore year, I want to be able to apply for the Haas School of Business and am gathering advice for the best possible combination of courses to maximize my GPA. And,finally, if I don’t make ORMS or IEOR, I’ll try and double major in EEP and CS(LNS).

Put into a simple numbered list of priorities:

 1. Switch to ORMS and join Haas
 2. If I don’t make ORMS, I’ll hopefully be able to join IEOR and join Haas
 3. If I don’t make IEOR, I’ll hopefully join Haas and double major in EEP(CNR)& CS(LNS)

I’ve been told to take Engin. 7 (ORMS&IEOR PreReq) during Junior/Senior year as it will be difficult to get a good grade in the class. I’ve also heard it would be best to take UGBA in the Spring Semester. Also, a student at Cal told me to take breadth courses w/ lower div. courses to maximize my GPA. I don’t know how much or which ones to take.

Questions:

 1. When is the soonest I can switch majors?
 2. Can I apply to ORMS and IEOR at the same time as a EEP(CNR) Major?
 3. What community college courses should I take during the summer? Should I take breadth or core classes at community college?
 4. What breadth classes should I take at Cal that are easy GPA boosters?
 5. Would you please post your advice on ANY of the lower division IEOR/ORMS/CS/Pre-Haas classes? Any information regarding professors, notes, classes, etc. would be greatly appreciated!
 6. Which classes should I mix together for first/second semester to maximize my GPA?

Thank you very much for your time!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

ORMS is an L&S major run by the IEOR department.
[Undergrad Academic Programs](http://ieor.berkeley.edu/AcademicPrograms/Ugrad/index.htm)

Lower division requirements for each major:

ORMS: Math 1A, 1B, 53, 54; Engineering 7; Economics 1, UGBA 10
IEOR: Math 1A, 1B, 53, 54; Engineering 7; Chemistry 1A/1AL; Physics 7A, 7B; CS 9C, 9F, or 9G; engineering breadth courses
Business: Math 1A, 1B or 16A, 16B; Economics 1; UGBA 10; Statistics 20 or 21; R&C A and B
CS: Math 1A, 1B, 54; CS 61A, 61B, 61C, 70; EE 42
EEP: Math 1A, 1B or 16A, 16B; Economics 1; Statistics 20 or 21

http://opa.berkeley.edu/AnalysesReports/CappedMajorAnalysis.pdf</a> indicates that ORMS requires a 3.2 GPA in Math 53, 54; Economics 1; UGBA 10 and then admits on a first come first served basis, although the IEOR department itself says that “Many factors are considered in determining admission. The main criterion is academic performance as measured by Berkeley GPA in the prerequisite courses.”

Changing into IEOR involves changing in to the College of Engineering:
[Change of College (into COE) ? UC Berkeley College of Engineering](Change of college - Berkeley Engineering)

L&S CS is likely to be a capped major; the current minimum GPA in prerequisite courses of 2.0 is rumored to become a 3.0 or something similar to declare the major.

Business is competitive admission:

If you are unsure, you probably at least want to enroll in a math course (see the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1305840-freshman-math-faq.html</a> ), Economics 1, an R&C course (unless you have a 5 on AP English literature), and one other course. Note that Engineering 7 is impacted in the spring, so if ORMS and IEOR are of strong interest, consider taking it in the fall if you are in Math 1B or a higher math course.

Thank you very much @ucbalumnus!!

Are there any pre-reqs that I can knock out at a community college?

Should I aim to take some breadth courses at a CC and then take the core course load at UCB or the other way around, if allowed?

Check L&S, CoE, and each major with respect to their policies on CC courses. However, it is known that the business major wants a student who has started at Berkeley to take all remaining prerequisites at Berkeley (although using AP credit or CC courses taken while in high school is accepted).
Both L&S and CoE have specific policies about taking CC courses during a fall or spring semester while enrolled at Berkeley the same semester.
