If a job doesn't give you enough hours: What does that mean?

My current, updated situation from an earlier thread by me:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-confidential-cafe/2083474-work-situation.html

I’ve decided to stay for the remainder of the summer because most of the places around me aren’t hiring at this time. But, I’m not getting enough hours. I’m only getting between 20-23 a week, and I’m trying to aim between 30-35 hrs. per week.

The problem:

When I asked them for more hours, they haven’t given me any, yet. I have to share my current job with 3 other cart attendants which makes it difficult for all of us to make more money. I’m still waiting to be cross trained as well.

The solution: I’ll either get a 2nd job or work somewhere else next summer. I said next summer because I’ll be working at an on-campus job this upcoming semester, while I continue to work for my current job during winter and spring break of this year.

On an extra note, I’ve made a list of 3 reasons why they may cut hours within a company:

  1. Did they hire too many people?
  2. Are they trying to make me resign so I can get more hours at a better job?
  3. Is the company trying to save money by cutting hours?

Some companies prefer a lot of part time workers. Over a certain number of hours they have to provide you with benefits, like health insurance.

It is easier to have 3 part-time people doing three separate things rather than having 1 full time employee who can only be in 1 place and require health benefits.
“It’s not personal, it’s business”

And with more ppl doing less hours, they have more ppl to cover if one is out sick or does not show up.

I’m hearing a lot of ppl with this issue right now!

Welcome to the world of the part time worker. It’s hard to find more than 20 hours a week if you’re working part-time. 30-35 hours is an unreasonable expectation. You might as well do a full-time job.

@cfsnowy I guess it all depends on the position because some people at my store work 30-35 hrs. a week as a part-time employee…
