If anyone can chance me...

Even though it may need harsh criticism, please be honest!

I go to a IB school that is pretty competitive (not Westwood-competitive though).
My gpa is 4.1341 weighted, and my rank is 11.9% out of 537 students.
SAT: Reading 590 Math 760 Writing 710 (Comb 2060)
ACT: Math 35 English 32 Reading 23 Science 31 (Comb 30) (First test, and second one[not scored yet] I invested a lot more time in preparation)
ECs: No team, NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, Chinese Culture Club (copres), Science club, Sports Appreciation Club, FCA, Leadership Council (I joined these late sophomore year without realizing their importance)
Job : I taught as an SAT math teacher during 2 summers.
Community Service: Total of about 100 with mission trips and NHS, IB CAS required hours

I came from a foreign country in my freshmen year second semester and took regulars, so my rank was about 35%. I got it up higher but not enough, in my opinion.
I’m part of the IB diploma curriculum and I take two sciences (Chemistry HL and IB physics in my junior year and ap physics c in my senior year).

I hope to apply for engineering majors, although realistically unlikely to be admitted, and put chemical and civil engineering as my two choices after hearing about the third automatic consideration for the undeclared choice.

Evaluate my high school career please!

Clearly, your weaker in reading comprehension than on math, science, or English grammar.

The Liberal Arts, Natural Science, and Business models for expected freshman year GPA all use the SAT CR score.

Luckily for you, the engineering school’s expected GPA model uses only the SAT Writing and Math scores: it does not use the CR score. The ACT version uses only the Math and English with writing scores. The committee will use whichever set makes you look the best given the college to which you are applying.

The SAT based forecast is for you to have roughly a 3.5 freshman year GPA. The average is closer to 3.0. So, on the basis of your scores, your chances are good – just my opinion though.

However, the ‘numbers’ are only half the picture. The other half involves your essays and extra curricular stuff. If English is not your first language, have your essays proof read & edited by, say, your English teacher. (Even if English is your first language, have them proof read and edited.) Your essays could be the deciding factor. I suggest you keep them clear & concise with sentences less than 20 words in length when at all possible.

Good luck.

Thank you! Even though it’s just your opinion it sure helped with my confidence! I’m getting the essays proofread by friends in journalism major and some teachers. Thank you again!

Sadly, I was capped… Is it possible that they forgot to consider me for the undecided major?

See that is why I am thinking of appealing because I did a hard major should have stuck with undecided the scores were at my range

Have you got DIRECTLY into engineering anywhere else? A&M, Texas Tech? UH?

CAP guarantees admission only to UGS, COLA , and CNS, not engineering. You cannot take any engineering classes while in CAP (you have to take classes from approved list, and they are all general ed).

If you are lucky to get into engineering directly from CAP, you’ll have 1 additional year. If you are not lucky and you get into UGS after CAP, you’ll have 2 additional years.
$ 50,000 + extra cost.

I don’t know your immigration status, but if you plan to work in Texas it’s not absolutely necessary to attend UT to get a good engineering job. Or to get into a good grad school.
If you are planning to work in your foreign country, and people are crazy about “prestige” there, I don’t know.

Thanks! I am a resident in Texas by the way, so I pay the resident tuition. I need to get a F-1 visa from the university.

I got into A&M engineering and UIUC engineering. Urbana Champaign is an out of state school so I count as an international ($38000 tuition each year).

I also scored a 33 on the next ACT that I turned in during the application.

Thanks for your opinion! I guess it’s time that I talk with my parents with the future possibilities and considerations.

Having read the threads on ut this past week, it looks like applicants were very competitive this year. People with 33 ACT, or even 35 ACT being rejected. Hk3257 have you made any decisions?

No, I’m thinking of appealing for admission. I’m going to ask my college advisor for an additional recommendation letter if she’s not too busy.
