If anyone can send me some guidance?

About me:
I’m a senior student from a non-ap high school in mainland China . (already submited all the college applications)
Probably will major in Econ.
Haven’t take any AP before.

Now I wonder if it’s necessary to self study AP (An AP test costs about 170 dollars here.)

My friends tells me that if I take many of APs, I can save a lot of money by these AP credits. But I’m not sure how it works. Take Rice as an example in two situations.

1.To self study the AP course that can help me skip the class which is useful for my major:
I need to take MATH 101 before I take an specific Econ course. If I take AP Calculus BC, then I get 3 credits in advance and skip MATH 101. Does it mean that I just have to pay for 9 more credits needed? So AP Calculus BC saves me the fee of 3 credits?? Am I correct?

But there comes another problem.
Though I’ve completed self studying Ap Calculus in a few days, I’m afraid the test-oriented study can only help me with the AP exam and cannot match the course MATH 101 in college.(Is that true?) So if I skip Math 101 and save the money, i’ll probably fall behind other students who take it?

2.To self study the AP course that can help me skip the class which is not useful for my major:
Rice requires every student 12 credits in Humanities . If I take AP WH, then I get 3 credits in advance. Does it mean that I can skip the corresponding history class and just have to pay for 9 more credits in Humanities? So AP WH saves me the fee of 3 credits?? Am I correct?

Any thoughts about how AP can save money or do any other good?
I’ve self studied microecon. But should I take the AP credit and skip INTRO or attend the INTRO class to lay a more solid foundation of Economics??

Thanks for any suggestion! :)
