<p>Yes, it can be put to use at the right places. If an employer is familiar with it, it should carry the same weight as Red Cross certification. However, Red Cross is more widely known than BSA.</p>

<p>BSA certified lifeguards are also invaluable to a troop as BSA guidelines require a certain number be present at some activities.</p>

<p>For what it’s worth, I preferred the BSA course.</p>

<p>The biggest difference between Red Cross and BSA certification is that the Scouts include training in beach management and lake rescue. This is not part of the official requirements of BSA Lifeguard, but I’ve watched this training taking place at summer camps for the last seven years and it always includes buddy-system checks and searching for swimmers in poor-visibility water. Most Red Cross training I’ve seen was in pools. The training is time consuming. Most Scouts and adult leaders who earn this certification don’t do much else during five days at summer camp.</p>
