<p>I am not sure yet but I might be in my schools second decile when they rank us (top 20%). my gpa will probably be around a 96 or 97. Would this severely hurt my chances? Also, what if my SATs and subjective material are really strong and its just this class rank (also my high school is a very competitive public school). I really like Penn but if its not reasonable i guess I should quit looking into it. Also, i would apply ED next year if that helps… </p>

<p>That totally depends on your SATs, SAT II’s and ECs. Perhaps you’ve done something noteworthy in those areas. </p>
<p>Another factor is the size of your high school class. If there are only 10 graduating seniors, then the 2nd decile is the salutatorian. If there are only 50 kids in your grade, and you go to a very competitive HS, you could still have a chance.</p>

<p>It’s unlikely, then. GPA and SAT are the bulk of the application. A large number of the 30+ kids above you probably have similar SAT and SAT II scores, as well as the perfunctory leadership positions, etc. In that case, even though you might be a comparable applicant, I think that Penn would likely take the higher ranked student to boost its own numbers.</p>
<p>However, you might have very strong EC’s and SATs and SAT IIs. What are they, specifically? Do you have any leadership? Have you done anything especially noteworthy (write a book, prize-winning research)? Are you an under-represented minority (black, hispanic)? Are you a legacy? And very importantly: How many kids from your HS does Penn generally take?</p>
<p>Answer all of those question, and I’ll be able to give you a much better idea. You need to provide a little information first!</p>
<p>well they except a couple every year from the few that apply. i do not have my SAT scores yet because i just recently took them (i am aiming for a 2250). im not a legacy or minority. i do a lot of volunteering and i was also thinking about doing penn’s pre college program over the summer! i have done three different varsity sports for 4 years each holding leadership positions (captain) on one and received the MVP and coaches award (sophmore year). i had artwork of mine published in my school newspaper or something freshman year. ummm SAT IIs i hope to get over 750 (math II and ush) im taking 6 APs next year. please note that im still not positive that i wont be in the top 10% next year. also, i have a very notable grade increase from freshman year (only 2 Bs high school carreer both coming in 9th grade). Lastly, i feel like i can make my essays really really good. do the essays hold a lot of weight??

<p>Wait until the end of your junior year, see where you stand in terms of decile, see what your SAT scores are, and then we’ll talk. Otherwise, good start.</p>
<p>if your school is anything like ours, the lowest class rank that has been admitted over the last 5 years has been top 4-5%…in other words #1-8 out of approx 280-300 class…and those peeps ran the gamut of SAT scores…Penn seems to very class rank conscious…lower ranks have been admitted to Dartmouth, Brown, etc, but not Penn, even ED, even URM’s…NJ competitive public…</p>

<p>^ I agree. Though you’ve really got to balance your scores, ECs, essays, and see if those could give you a boost. If you think that they’re just well, hmm, about there, then chances probably aren’t very high. But unless you’re doing really badly, like 500s in each section of your SATs, no ECs to speak of, nothing else in your favour, there’s no harm trying.</p>

<p>2nd decile means top 80 percent.</p>
<p>8th decile means top 20 percent.</p>
<p>9th decile means top 10 percent.</p>

<p>Pay attention this year to where kids in the senior class at your school are accepted. If kids outside of the top decile get accepted at Ivy-level schools, then you probably have a chance. If only the top 10 or 20 do, except for special cases, then maybe not. There are really strong private schools in NYC where being in the top HALF of your class isn’t a prerequisite for getting into Penn, and I’ll bet Penn takes kids below the top decile at Stuyvesant. At my kids’ public school – which is probably Penn’s #1 feeder over the past 20-30 years – top 7-8% would pretty much be the limit, except for recruited athletes.</p>

the “2nd decile” of my school ends up at ivies or other top unis / LACs, so if your school is a very competitive public school like mine, you should be fine (as said many times before).
stop asking for reassurance. your threads are like half of the penn board. just know that YOU’RE FINE and once you stop worrying, you can probably get into penn.</p>
<p>I share some of CrystalPineapple’s annoyance with the redundant threads, but I’m more unimpressed with your lack of information. You don’t have SATs/SAT II’s listed yet, you haven’t told us what type of high school you go to, you don’t know if kids from the 2nd decile are ever accepted into Ivy League schools and at what rates; in short, we know next to nothing about very important parts of your application.</p>
<p>So please: chill for a couple of months, work hard, see how your tests go, and above all: find out about this year’s seniors!</p>
