i got into spring (Undecided for major), but i plan to go into molecular biology as berkeley. i’m also going into the fall extension program.

will it take me longer to graduate? like, does the fall extension program offer all the courses UC Berkeley offers for a fall admit looking to go into molecular biology? i’m worried i’m going to have to graduate in five years instead of four, which would be more money my parents would have to pay.

yeah, as long as you do fpf or take cc classes, you will graduate with the fall admits
if you decide to take that fall semester off for whatever reason, then you will graduate later than the fall admits

i will also be doing fall extension and mcb. i heard they don’t offer science courses in fall extension though, so we’ll be a little behind. T_T

Because you don’t need all two years to fulfill the prereqs for MCB. For MCB you need: 2 semesters math, Chem 1A, 3A, 3B, Bio 1A, 1B, Physics 8A, 8B. Usually people take something like this:

1st semester: math 1A, Chem 1A
2nd semester: math 1B, Chem 3A,
summer: Physics 8A
3rd semester: Chem 3B, Bio 1B
4th semester: Physics 8B, Bio 1A

Usually people take 4 classes so they’ll have two humanities or something.
Here’s what you might do:

1st semester: Math 1A in FPF (yay)
2nd semester: Chem 1A, Math 1B
summer: Physics 8A
3rd semester: Chem 3A, Bio 1B, Physics 8B
4th semester: Chem 3B, Bio 1A

As you can see, a little more cramped, but almost the same schedules. This is what we mean by “you’ll be behind but you’ll still graduate.” As you can see you might be a semester behind in the Chem series, but other than that the prereqs give you so much leeway that it’s very easy to graduate in 4 years.

OK I’m going to make this bluntly clear. If you are doing MCB because you think its better than IB for Med-school, you are foolish. First of all MCB consists of tight, strict course paths; IB is a free-do-what-you-want type of major. You specialize as much as you want. According to Tim White, paleoanthro professor from the IB department, the only people saying MCB is better than IB for med are the pre-med students in MCB and the med-schools don’t care about IB v MCB. Also, with MCB you aren’t looking at a whole organism, but just cells and molecules. IB you have a broader outlook than that.

You can easily AP out of the math requirement for IB and you can AP out for Bio1A/B with a 4 or 5 for IB/MCB.

My plan

Fall 07 FPF
Four breadth courses

Spring 08
Chem 1A, Physics 8A, Human Paleo*, ?

Summer 08
Chem 3A

Fall 08
Physics 8B, Chem 3B, ?, ?

Is it possible to do that

*an upper-div I know I’m allowed to take as I have spoken to the professor

On a side note, how can you call yourself a Biology major without taking Bio 1A and 1B. I have taken AP Bio (scored 5), Bio 1A is very intense and an initiation of sorts and you learn alot way more than I learned in HS, that is why you came to berkeley right?

Sorry if you can’t understand this, its a little incoherent.

I’m doing IB Biology HL. Biology AP is the first year of Biology HL at my school. I got a 5 in Biology AP. I have a covered a good deal over Biology AP already due to Biology HL

If you are planning on skipping any of the requirements by APing out of them, think again. Med schools WANT you to take those basic courses and do well in them. If you test out of them, you will have to explain why and show them that you are doing far more advanced versions of it very well.

If you aren’t going to pre-med route, I’d recommend APing out of the two classes. That why, you will have time to take other classes that are available.

I’m not pre-med. I’m paleo. I’ll need to go to grad for a Ph.D in Paleo. I don’t know whether they still want me to retake the 1A/1B for that. Since it seems people don’t really take 1A/1B until they’re in their second year, I’ll adjust my plans if it seems I should.

BTW how many classes are we allowed to take during summer school
