if i really do productive research over the summer and I decided that i want to publish a paper on this research…CAN I?

I mean, I am going to intern with a professor in his lab on HIS RESEARCH…but whatever data i get will be from MY OWN hands, you know? so…can i write a paper about it? or is that not allowed, since the research topic itself wasn’t my idea, it was the prof’s?

in order to get a paper published, do i have to come up w/ my own research TOPIC?
Or can i just follow along with the prof’s research and then write about what I OBSERVED in that lab?

It depends on the professor, so you should talk to them about it. In general, the professor might publish a paper that you collaborated on, but he would still be the first name listed.
It would be a bit like publishing a MadLibs story as your own. Yes, you filled in the details, but the story itself came from someone else. That example might be a bit of an exaggeration, but its pretty close.
You could, however, possibly write a paper for a competition, fair, or symposium like Intel or JSHS, but talk to the professor about that too.
