EAST HADDAM – Four years ago, Anne Frances Durfee was living in a small, impoverished city in southern Mexico, learning about the struggles of the Mexican working class while soaking up the traditions of her mother’s large extended family.

It was a life-changing experience that inspired Durfee to dive into her studies with plans to be the first person in her family to go to college. On Wednesday, the 17-year-old honors student graduated from Nathan Hale-Ray High School, bound for Princeton University.

“In Mexico, they only know the big-name American colleges, like Yale, Harvard, Princeton,” Durfee said before the commencement ceremony. “I figure, if I’m going to be the first one to go to college, I should aim high. I still can’t believe I did it.”

Congratulations, Anne!
