…can I still become an Actuary?

And will I be at a disadvantage vs. those who majored in math/statistics?

I’d try to go to a school offering an actual actuary program so you could be best prepared for the series of exams required. If that’s not an option, and you do finance before math/stats make sure you take a heavy math/stats load at the same time. At least minor in math/stats…

Ok, so Penn State’s Smeal has the actuarial science major and offers a degree for that

Let’s say I get into either Boston College, Emory, or Villanova, which are better b-schools than PSU’s Smeal, but don’t offer actuarial science

Although Penn State is the inferior business school, I am better off going there if I want to become an actuary, correct?

Rather than major in finance and minor at math at those other 3 schools?

thanks

Boston College and Villanova have better business schools than PSU? You’ve got to be kidding me. Look at US news again. BW rankings are BS.

According to US News, Nova is ranked 71st in the nation for undergrad business.

C’mon, do you take that seriously???

71st?? Are you kidding me?? Do you know how hard it is to get into Villanova’s business school? For one, it’s much harder than Smeal. Second of all, Villanova’s business/engineering programs are its most prestigious. So why does US News rank it 71st for undergrad business?

how do you justify Smeal being 18th and Villanova being 71st?

C’mon

US News is crap

you guys are idiots. get a life

For undergraduate business, Businessweek ranks the schools MUCH better than US News. But rankings are all subjective depending on what you want to emphasize.

^ No it doesn’t. Their rankings change so much every year that its hard to take it seriously.

dfall, just p*** off.

US news is a joke. if you look at the ranking criteria comparing the two magazines, there’s a lot of murky ground in US New’s. BW uses a lot of recruiters feedback, employment, etc… which is why we go to college in the first place, right?
but sophmore12’s right… rankings don’t really mean much. but what I do know is that emory and villanova are much more prestigious than pstate. but i dont believe emory or nova have actuary programs… and if you say pstate does, then go for it.

Villanova is not more prest. than PSU business school. They are about equal.

To the OP; you can become an actuary generally no matter what major you take. However, the tests to become an actuary are generally heavily ladden with statistics. IMO, I would sooner get an applied math degree or statistics, take the first two exams, get a job as an actuary which will pay you to take the rest of the exams, and work towards an MBA or Masters in Finance after that if you still want those letters at the end of your name.

^^^^

But statistics or applied math isn’t better than the actual major of actuarial science, correct?
