If I pass an exam to prove my proficiency in Japanese at a CC, will I earn 5 units for transferring?

I’m planning on transferring this fall as an IR major.

I’m currently taking Spanish to complete the foreign language requirement for the IGETC plan. I’m also bilingual in Japanese though, so I want to take an exam to prove my proficiency so I can state that I am “trilingual” on my applications.

If I pass this exam, will I earn 5 units?

Also: Is TOEFL the test that I need to take? Every counselor that I’ve asked regarding this topic has asked me to “research online”, “go to the foreign language section on the school website”

but I can’t find clear information. The TOEFL test seems to be for international students. I’m really confused :/

In most cases, exams can allow you to count a course as fulfilled for prerequisite purposes (i.e. to take a more advanced course in the subject) or for some types of graduation subject requirements (e.g. a foreign language requirement), but not give you credit units.

I am pretty sure they will give you unit credit. I went to two community colleges, and both gave unit credit for taking exams. The program was called credit by examination. Just go to your CC’s website and type in “credit by examination”. The interesting thing is that the Universities you transfer to will not even know you got the credit by taking an exam. The college will just giving you the notation of a 'P" for you grade, just as if you were taking the Class on a Pass/No Pass scale. If you’re still unsure, then just check your transcript, that should tell you if you got credit.

I agree with @ucbalumnus‌. I believe you get subject credit but not unit credit. That was how I interpreted it anyway, but @collegdropout1 seems to have gotten credit so I may need to revise.

You can take credit by exam, and receive units and P. You have to find a school offering the course who will administer the exam. It won’t necessarily be 5 units- it will be how many ever units the course is worth at that a school.
