If I transfer from Engineering to Literature

Hey guys. I know this is a weird question. The subjects don’t relate to each other at all. Hopefully someone can help me out. If I transfer to a new school and change my major from Engineering to Literature, would I have to stay in college longer? I received a few answers but I want to see what other people think.

The best response is it depends:
How far along are you?
What courses have you taken so far?
Where will you transfer to?
Will they accept the credits you have earned?

Hey WhiteArdlay,

I am in the same boat as you. I will be switching from engineering to the humanities, and am intending to transfer.

mominva bring up some very good questions, and they lead the most important question: Can you fulfill the literature major requirement on time? This is something you need to figure out on your own.

First, read the college’s course catalog. Next talk with a transfer admission counselor. You should ask questions regarding the major requirements and discuss which of your courses will transfer and for what type of credit. Ask to speak with an adviser of the literature major, or better yet the head of that department.

Based on the information you received thus far, do the math and figure out if you will be able to graduate on time. Clarify and general questions with admissions, than talk briefly with the head of the department. Show interest, and actively formalize a plan that you will follow if you are admitted.

Going the extra mile here is very important for several reasons. First, It shows that you are very interested into pursuing literature. Two, if you are accepted you will know that everything will work out. Most importantly, it is the only real way to know for sure!

In my case: I will lose half a semesters worth of credit, but I will still be able to graduate on time.

Hope this helps

Another variable is whether the school has required classes.

I lost credits anyways while transferring, and I didn’t even change majors.

Thanks for all the help guys. You have been really helpful. I’m going to contact the school and see what they say.
