If I Was Declined Last Fall, Is It Pointless To Try To Transfer This Winter?

I was denied from U of M as an instate student last year when I applied as a Freshmen. I have decided to go to Oakland Community College for either a semester or a year. I am going to attempt to transfer, but do my chances change apply as a transfer this Winter when barely any of my credentials have changed? Since this is my first semester at OCC and the deadline for U of M is 10/1, my OCC grades will not be considered, meaning that they’ll be looking at the same high school transcript as last year when I was denied (for reference my high school grades were 3.2 UW Fresh year, 3.4 Soph year, 3.9 (4.1W) Junior year, and around 3.6 UW Senior year (4.2 W). I also have the same ACT score of a 28. The only things that will differ are my essays and I might try to get a different recommendation. I’m currently trying to get a doctor who performed a lot on my dad during his cancer at Michigan’s hospital. I figure since the doctor works for U of Michigan, his rec will be valued.

That’s basically all that is changing. Are my chances much different applying as a transfer for next semester? Should I just wait until I have 26 credits to transfer so they’ll look strictly at my college career?
Thanks!

Having your dad’s doctor as a reference doesn’t make sense and won’t add value to your application. . Does the U of M have lower admissions requirements if you are willing to start in the spring or summer? Maybe that would be your best bet. So my answer is that you might have a better shot for a winter enrollment date.

It is probably worth a try. Schools don’t have to include the scores for transfers in their school profile so they may be more willing to take a student as a transfer who has good grades but whose scores would have impacted negatively on their fall admit stats for new students.

It probably won’t hurt to try but it is not likely to work. There are not many freshmen transfer, particularly if you don’t have any college GPA yet.

You are a lot better off getting a 4.0 at your CC and applying as a transfer for next fall. The doctor rec will do you zero good – you didn’t work for him, you are just trying to play on his UM connection. They would much rather have a rec from someone not affiliated with UM who can say great things about you based in your work in the classroom or lab or something similar. And you haven’t improved anything they care about for admissions.

Yeah, that’s what I was originally planning. I got into IU last year and I might just go there next semester as it’s pretty much a guaranteed spot in the B-school as opposed to the 30% chance within Mich for Ross.

Thanks for the advice.

You may want to just get your associate’s and then your credits will cover gen ed for most schools, including i believe UM. There isn’t much room for transfers though, as the dropout rate is pretty low, so you’ll need to do really well.

In particular, you’re very unlikely to get in after only 1 semester and that’s not necessarily the best time to be a newcomer. Better to start off in the fall with everyone else imo
