Hi! I’m about to enter SFSU in the Fall. I’m currently planning my schedule so that nothing surprises me or delays my transfer to Columbia College Chicago.
My question is: Since I will be transferring out of SFSU, do I need all the GE requirements that SFSU requires for graduation – OR do I just need the credits that Columbia College Chicago (the college I’m transferring to) needs for their GE requirements?
SFSU has a list of all GE requirements to obtain a BE right [here. However, CCC’s GE requirements require less](https://wcmdemo7.sfsu.edu/bulletin1516/undergraduate_education/uged/Undergraduate_Degree_Overview#INTRO_GE). Do I need all the extra SFSU credits to transfer into Columbia?
Thank you for reading!
Is there any reason why you aren’t starting at CCC?
If you know for certain that you will transfer to CCC, why SFSU instead of an even less expensive community college? Ask CCC what happens if you enroll with a full associates degree. Some places will accept that as fulfilling their GE requirements even if the courses don’t match exactly to their GE requirements.
If you are planning to transfer, you should do your best to make certain that the courses that you take at SFSU will indeed transfer. You want them to match up with courses that will fulfill the GE requirements or major requirements at the target school. This could mean that you take some classes at SFSU that don’t count for their GE or toward a possible major there, but will fulfill a particular requirement at CCC.
Since you seem to be very determined in transferring to CCC, I would suggest taking all/most of the GE’s that school requires. If there may be a reason you don’t transfer later on, you should still somewhat keep taking courses that follow SFSU’s GE’s so you don’t fall behind.
