When I finished writing one of my essays, I really liked it. And after a few minor revisions, I liked it even more, felt quite proud of it. I felt that the idea was creative and pretty well-executed, and said a lot about me.

But after showing it to a few people [some relatives, some teachers] I’m not so sure. I guess I expected them to really like it, be excited about it [which is probably unrealistic, now that I come to think of it.] But if they just gave it back to me and said they thought it was good or pretty good, does that mean I should probably re-write it? I’m trying to strike a balance between keeping my voice and being clear, because if 4 people don’t like it and I do, maybe I’m wrong about something!

And no offense, but if this post is indicative at all of your writing skills (coherence, mainly) then I’d suggest getting some serious help. Actually I guess that is pretty rude of me to say. Whatever.

The wow factor can’t hurt. But if you define a great college essay as one which doesn’t hurt your chances of admission, then an essay need not have a wow factor.

if it can’t wow, make sure that it is a solid essay and won’t detract from your application. not everything has to be a homerun, a solid two base hit is not better if you have homeruns else where. best of luck! james
