I’m posting this here because I figure adults would probably be able to better answer my question than the teens.

My mom is looking into getting a job in one of the UC school departments. Probably something in marketing or translation for UC Irvine. Its all up in the air right now. Anyway, I was just wondering… I really want to go to UCLA. And I’m going to apply not only there but to other UC schools as well. Would her involvement in the UC school system help me in any way in the admissions process? I noticed that there is a little box that asks if a parent works in the UC system on the UC application.

No, it would not help in the admissions process. The UC’s used to give legacy boosts if your parent graduated from that UC, but that was ended sometime around 2000. You probably get discounted or free tuition, though.

There was talk about reduced tuition/fees for children of UC staff, but it never got off the ground. The UC’s are still state instituions…no such luck.

The CT state universities are also state institutions. BUT state employees(including those who work at the state U’s) and their immediate families (kids or spouses) get either free or very reduced tuition.

UC’s offer free tuition to all in-state residents; however, there are activity fees that students have to pay. I could find noting on the UC’s employment information on-line about employee discounts.

“The average cost for CA resident attending a UC–and living in dorm–is $22,200. At UCLA, it may run a little higher.”

nah it’s not that high yet i dont think. it’s running somewhere between $21,000 to $22,000 for UCLA (in dorm) right now. i believe all the other UC’s are slightly lower but around the $20,000 range (in dorm).
