If you are having a discussion with someone at the university, say a white classmate, professor, TA or counselor, and they ask you got accepted to the university, given that your personality traits or non-academic credentials are not similar to those of the average student at the university, but they don’t put it that way, they just ask you how you got accepted to the university given some undesirable aspect of your personality or lack of interest in something unrelated to academics, and you happen to belong to an underrepresented ethnic group, is it reasonable to assume that the person asking the question is hinting at affirmative action and wants you to feel guilty about it?

Well I guess it’s may be just a little bit complicated than that. There are people who can be prejudiced and also there’s ppl who r curious cuz may be they have not met sb like u. So it rlly depends, and I think that ur the one who’s gonna have to sense it and not take it too seriously. Hope that helps.

Yeah, it’s hard to determine. They really could just be incredulous that you got in despite not caring about school or whatever.

I wouldn’t dwell on it too much.

If it is the case you’re suggesting, what you do is tell said professor or classmates that you got in by humping the dean. Hard.

They will ask you no follow-up questions, guaranteed.

^ I agree with Plattsburgh, quick wit will shut people up really fast.

I’m a white person at a selective university and I have been asked that too. Most of the time I get the felling that they are asking it to get to know more about me. Whenever I ask the question, to both URMs and non-URMs, that is why I ask it.

To add to the pervious two posts, in addition to sleeping with the dean, I have also found that claiming that you are a mistake is also a good way to go if you don’t feel like telling your high school story.

firehouse, in your case, what’s so unconventional about you that compelled people to ask you how you got accepted to the university?
