If You Could Create Your Own Scholarship...

lets pretend you’re a succesful person who now has enough money to create your own scholarship…lets say you’re going to give away $500,000.

what would be the criteria for your scholarship. what would you look for in a winning app. how much money would each student get (50 $10000 winners, 25 $20000 winners…) mine would be

The Most Hilarious Scholarship
25 winners-$20.000 each
winners get to KEEP any left over scholarship money after paying the university. (so if they later recieved a full ride somewhere, they just won 20 grand)
criteria:
-get accepted and go to a decent university (listed top 100 by usnews)
-fill app that only includes name, address, email, university name, and ssn
then to the most important part…
-they must send me something they made that’ll make me laugh (home movie, joke, food, photo, story, etc…). whoever sends me the funniest stuff wins.

haha…the html really doesnt work on thread titles

Honestly, I would probably just give it to the kid who reminded me most of myself.

My scholarship would only have 1 critera:

You must be white (of caucasian ancestry).

The scholarship would be sponsored by the NAACLP (National Association for the Advancement of Color-less People)

I’m tired of all these other scholarships where you have to be female/hispanic/native american/african american/gay-lesbian/etc. so I’m making a scholarship for white people only.

I would give a generous donation, with the requirement that the person be ranked last in his/her class.

You KNOW that they’re not going to college, so you look like an awesome philanthropist and have to do nothing in terms of commitment.

Whatever scholarship I would create, I would make sure that it was race- and sex-blind. For some reason, as athlonmj pointed out, it’s socially acceptable to discriminate against the majority on the basis of race. This is really just as wrong as discriminating against minorities, which we all know causes lawsuits and really bad press. Though discrimination on almost any basis IS legal for the nonprofit organizations that offer most scholarships, Affirmative Action programs and scholarships that require someone to be of a certain race or sex are just as unethical as segregation, though not as obviously destructive. I would award any scholarship on the basis of financial need and/or merit only, thus having a better chance of helping those who need or deserve it.

That said, I would create a scholarship only for students who want to attend college out-of-state. Lots and lots of scholarships benefit those who want to stay close to home. That’s nice for keeping talent in the state, but it hurts the (interstate, not international) geographic diversity of our colleges and universities. Not that I want to discriminate unfairly in this way, but I just want to offset what most local/state scholarship programs (at least where I live) do.

I think athlonmj just won coqui’s The Most Hilarious Scholarship

The day that there are well known scholarships for white people. LOL

So to go with athlonmj I’ll say a scholaship for Asians. 100 $5000 scholarships
They would be known as the most prestigious scholarships, since they would be so damn hard to get.

LOL! very clever athlon and i agree outastate.

hmm, that’s a really good question…i think i’'ll make it a lotto-type thing haha jjk

i really don’t know

Exactly outastate, that’s why I proposed a scholarship for white people.

I would create a scholarship to whoever could beat me in a beer drinking contest.

I would have one for Bharatanatyam dancers…there aren’t any that I know of when you can get dance scholorships for every other type of dance.

Build It Scholarship

Celebrain, that’s awesome. Can parochial school students participate too? And what if someone has an SAT score over 1450, and retakes it and does worse in order to get your scholarship? Would that count?

hehe If retaken to get a lower score, they may participate, I do like persistence

and parochial schools may participate as well

lol celebrian, im sure that last part is in the smallest legible print possible.

My scholarship would award balanced people. You cannot letter in more than one sport. You cannot get any perfect test scores. There is a limit on the number of APs you can take, etc. You must work hard, but you must not get worked up over getting perfect stats in everything. It’s easy to get obsessive over rank and test scores, almost as easy as slacking off (at least if you have asian parents). What about those who are capable of the top stats, who are decent in many areas without being the best in a single because they lead well-rounded lives? You know, those who are top 1% but not valedictorian. People who are happy with a 1520. I want to reward these students, who are super-smart but not perfect.

wow that so describes me silmon! it’s exactly me down to a T

Me too! Except I don’t have any letters because I dropped sports…oh well.

oh yea i forgot about that one! I quit lacrosse

criteria

SAT 1600 or more ( out of a possible 1600)

Gpa 1.5 or less

Extracurriculars national honor society president, state dodge ball champ.
