If you do not apply for financial aid at that time, you cannot apply in subsequent years

That’s a quote from a college website at a “need-sensitive” school that meets full need.

When I applied for college, back in the days of the dinosaurs, I did not apply for financial aid, but by the time I got to my junior year, my family’s situation had changed dramatically. My college, one that met full need then and now, stepped up and I got the aid I needed to be able to stay.

A kid I work with is applying to the college whose website I quoted. They won’t qualify for aid based on their current situation. My thought was that they should apply for it anyway, to keep the possibility open in case what happened to me happens to them, but they’re worried it might impact their chances of admission.

Does anyone know?

They’re a full pay family. Even at a need aware school, it won’t impact. If anything, they’ll get bonus points for being full pay.

Colleges themselves recommend you apply - and for reasons you state, it’s smart.

But hurt - no way.

Thanks!
