Currently, taking and failing Calculus 2. Semester ends today and I am 100% sure I am going to get a D.

I am however, through my online community college system enrolled for Discrete Mathematics (the system lets you enroll if you are already enrolled in the pre req the semester before)

So will I get dropped from Discrete Mathematics as soon as my grade gets posted for Calculus II?

The reason I ask this is because, a couple years ago I required to take Intermediate Algebra before going onto to Pre Calculus, and I got a D in it. However, I was never dropped from Pre-Calculus, I was allowed to take it the following semester and got a B in it despite Intermediate Algebra being the Pre-Req for it.

My plan, (If I don’t get dropped from the system for Discrete Mathematics) is to take Discrete next semester, and concurrently retake Calc II. Would this work? If not, how come it worked in my case a couple years ago?

The next class is Discrete Mathematics, which only includes the very basic concepts of Calc II, if any at all. Students have told me it involves absolutely no Calc II. I am familiar with concepts of Calc II, just have very difficult teacher and didn’t study enough.

I don’t know how you got away with taking pre-calculus without passing intermediate algebra. Most academic advisers would make sure that you have passed the prerequisite courses before moving onto advanced courses. However, advisers cannot force you to take a certain class, so you can skip a math class if you wish, but it probably won’t help you.

If you plan on discussing your plans for next semester with your adviser, I doubt that he or she will let you take Calculus II concurrently with discrete mathematics because Calc II is a prerequisite.

If you feel as if you will do well in discrete mathematics, then take it. I’m assuming your school has a drop-add period. If you feel as if it is too hard, then drop it.

At my University, we are able to sign up for courses that have a pre-req that is a class you are currently signed up for (just like your place) however we automatically get dropped from the class we signed up for if we fail the pre-req class. There is an exception. Some departments don’t even check for pre-reqs at all as in you can even sign up for a class that you don’t meet the pre-reqs of regardless of whether or not you are taking the pre-reqs the semester before.

The answer to your question “will failing a pre-req course automatically drop me from my next course automatically drop me from the next course” will vary from school to school so it cannot be answered here. What you can maybe do is take an alternate email address and ask that question to some advisor without stating your name and see what happens. I’m a mathematics major and I took Discrete Mathematics and not one thing from calc 2 showed up in that class. I don’t think anything from calc 1 showed up either. It’s possible that your Discrete Mathematics class is a little different than mine, though.

It’s going to vary from school to school. At my school, we can sign up for a course if we’re currently taking the prerequisite course. In the event that one fails the prerequisite course, the system automatically drops us from the registered course.

Those prerequisites can often be overridden though. Calc II may be a formal prerequisite for discrete mathematics, but in terms of the actual content in discrete mathematics, only a very basic understanding of calculus is needed.
